JC Polyomavirus Uses Extracellular Vesicles To Infect Target Cells.

mBio

April 2019

Department of Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, and Biochemistry, Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, USA

The endemic human JC polyomavirus (JCPyV) causes progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy in immune-suppressed patients. The mechanisms of virus infection are not understood because the major target cells for virus in the brain do not express virus receptors and do not bind virus. We found that JCPyV associates with extracellular vesicles (EVs) and can infect target cells independently of virus receptors.

The planar-alignment agent in an electro-optic liquid crystal (LC) device plays an essential role for the LC's electro-optical characteristics. Rubbed polyimide (PI) layers are conventionally used as the planar-alignment agent in traditional liquid crystal displays (LCDs). Here we experimentally demonstrate that the 2D hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheet can serve as the planar-alignment agent in an LC cell.

A novel facility for reduced-gravity testing: A setup for studying low-velocity collisions into granular surfaces.

Rev Sci Instrum

August 2016

Département Electronique, Optronique et Signal (DEOS), Systèmes Spatiaux (SSPA), Institut Supérieur de l'Aéronautique et de l'Espace (ISAE-SUPAERO), Université de Toulouse, 31055 Toulouse, France.

This work presents an experimental design for studying low-velocity collisions into granular surfaces in low-gravity. In the experiment apparatus, reduced-gravity is simulated by releasing a free-falling projectile into a surface container with a downward acceleration less than that of Earth's gravity. The acceleration of the surface is controlled through the use of an Atwood machine, or a system of pulleys and counterweights.

Diamond Light Source Ltd, Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, Didcot, Oxfordshire OX11 0DE, UK.

I12 is the Joint Engineering, Environmental and Processing (JEEP) beamline, constructed during Phase II of the Diamond Light Source. I12 is located on a short (5 m) straight section of the Diamond storage ring and uses a 4.2 T superconducting wiggler to provide polychromatic and monochromatic X-rays in the energy range 50-150 keV.
