Carbon black (CB) suspension exhibits various structures depending on the properties of solvent and dispersant as well as the preparation process of suspension. In most cases, CB particles do not exist as independent nanoparticles but as aggregates or agglomerates. In order to evaluate the size distribution at different level of hierarchal structure, we carried out static/dynamic ultrasound scattering analysis for the CB suspensions in alcohol and/or water with or without Nafion, a perfluorinated polymer. The potential of the dynamic ultrasound scattering technique was demonstrated by discriminating diffusing nanoparticles and micron-sized aggregates/agglomerates without dilution of the sample. Particularly, suppression of large agglomerates by addition of Nafion was clearly observed. Phosphotungstic acid (PWA), a family of polyoxometalate, was also employed to obtain smaller unit structures of the CB particles without formation of aggregation after decomposition of CB. The possible structures of the CB/PWA suspensions with and without Nafion were also discussed.

Significance: Maximal safe resection of brain tumors can be performed by neurosurgeons through the use of accurate and practical guidance tools that provide real-time information during surgery. Current established adjuvant intraoperative technologies include neuronavigation guidance, intraoperative imaging (MRI and ultrasound), and 5-ALA for fluorescence-guided surgery.
Aim: We have developed intraoperative Raman spectroscopy as a real-time decision support system for neurosurgical guidance in brain tumors.

Poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAm), a thermorresponsive polymer, highly soluble in water below its lower critical solution temperature (LCST), is widely used in biomedical applications like drug delivery. Being able to measure PNIPAm size and aggregation state in solution quickly, inexpensively, and accurately below the LCST is critical when stoichiometric particle or molecular ratios are required. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) is probably the most widely available, and inexpensive nanoparticle sizing technique, but there are limitations with respect to sample polydispersity.

Despite the evident benefits of spectral computed tomography (CT) in delivering qualitative imaging superior to that of conventional CT in adults, its application in pediatric diagnostic imaging is still relatively limited due to various reasons, including design limitations and radiation dose considerations. The use of specialized K-edge filters, in conjunction with other spectral technologies, has been demonstrated to improve spectral quantification accuracy. X-ray flux limitations generally pose challenges in these concepts when applied to adults.

Injectable biomaterials play a vital role in modern medicine, offering tailored functionalities for diverse therapeutic and diagnostic applications. In ophthalmology, for instance, viscoelastic materials are crucial for procedures such as cataract surgery but often leave residues, increasing postoperative risks. This study introduces injectable fluorescent viscoelastics (FluoVs) synthesized via one-step controlled radical copolymerization of oligo(ethylene glycol) acrylate and fluorescein acrylate.
