We altered the chlorophyll (Chl) binding sites in various versions of water-soluble chlorophyll protein (WSCP) by amino acid exchanges to alter their preferences for either Chl a or Chl b. WSCP is ideally suited for this mutational analysis since it forms a tetrameric complex with only four identical Chl binding sites. A loop of 4-6 amino acids is responsible for Chl a versus Chl b selectivity. We show that a single amino acid exchange within this loop changes the relative Chl a/b affinities by a factor of 40. We obtained crystal structures of this WSCP variant binding either Chl a or Chl b. The Chl binding sites in these structures were compared with those in the major light-harvesting complex (LHCII) of the photosynthetic apparatus in plants to search for similar structural features involved in Chl a/b binding specificity.

ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter family is one of the largest transporter families, which plays an important role in insecticide tolerance. In this study, we found that the ABC transporter inhibitor verapamil could significantly enhance the toxicity of chlorantraniliprole (CHL) to the model insect Drosophila melanogaster. Forty-six ABC transporter genes of D.

This study analyzed physiological and molecular characteristics associated with the resistance to aging or anti-senescence in Abel. Trees over 100 years old (ancient trees) were compared with those about 30 years old (mature trees). Total chlorophylls, chlorophyll / ratio, and hydrogen peroxide concentrations in ancient tree leaves were significantly higher than in their counterparts.

Hydrogels are hydrophilic 3-dimensional networks characterized by the retention of a large amount of water. Because of their water component, hydrogels are a promising method for targeted drug delivery. The water component, or "free volume", is a potential vehicle for protein drugs.

Rapid postharvest senescence and quality deterioration severely limit logistics of cowpeas. Melatonin (MEL) is a pivotal bioactive molecule that can modulate multiple physiological attributes in plants. In this study, physiological, transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses were conducted to explore the effects of exogenous MEL on cowpea senescence and its underlying mechanisms.

Photosynthetic organisms harvest light for energy. Some eukaryotic algae have specialized in harvesting far-red light by tuning chlorophyll a absorption through a mechanism still to be elucidated. Here, we combined optically detected magnetic resonance and pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance measurements on red-adapted light-harvesting complexes, rVCP, isolated from the freshwater eustigmatophyte alga Trachydiscus minutus to identify the location of the pigments responsible for this remarkable adaptation.
