The structure of the carbohydrate moiety of a natural phenolic glycoside can have a significant effect on the molecular interactions and physicochemical and pharmacokinetic properties of the entire compound, which may include anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities. The enzyme 6-O-α-rhamnosyl-β-glucosidase (EC 3.2.1.168) has the capacity to transfer the rutinosyl moiety (6-O-α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-β-d-glucopyranose) from 7-O-rutinosylated flavonoids to hydroxylated organic compounds. This transglycosylation reaction was optimized using hydroquinone (HQ) and hesperidin as rutinose acceptor and donor, respectively. Since HQ undergoes oxidation in a neutral to alkaline aqueous environment, the transglycosylation process was carried out at pH values ≤6.0. The structure of 4-hydroxyphenyl-β-rutinoside was confirmed by NMR, that is, a single glycosylated product with a free hydroxyl group was formed. The highest yield of 4-hydroxyphenyl-β-rutinoside (38%, regarding hesperidin) was achieved in a 2-h process at pH 5.0 and 30 °C, with 36 mM OH-acceptor and 5% (v/v) cosolvent. Under the same conditions, the enzyme synthesized glycoconjugates of various phenolic compounds (phloroglucinol, resorcinol, pyrogallol, catechol), with yields between 12% and 28% and an apparent direct linear relationship between the yield and the pK value of the aglycon. This work is a contribution to the development of convenient and sustainable processes for the glycosylation of small phenolic compounds.

Detrimental effects of terminal heat stress could be mitigated by exogenous application of synthetic compounds by preserving cell membrane integrity and protecting against oxidative damage. A field experiment was conducted to test the application of seven synthetic compounds on wheat growth traits: (1) thiourea (20 mM and 40mM); (2) potassium nitrate (1% and 2%); (3) sodium nitroprusside (400 μg mL-1 and 800μg mL-1 ); (4) dithiothreitol (25 ppm and 50ppm); (5) salicylic acid (100 ppm and 200ppm); (6) thioglycolic acid (200 ppm and 500ppm); and (7) putrescine (4 mM and 6mM). These compounds were applied at the anthesis and grain-filling stages to enhance physio-biochemical traits and yield attributes of wheat (Triticum aestivum ) cvs GW-11 and GW-496 under terminal heat stress.

A smartphone-integrated colorimetric sensor is introduced for the rapid detection of phenolic compounds, including 8-hydroquinone (HQ), p-nitrophenol (NP), and catechol (CC). This sensor relies on the peroxidase-mimicking activity of aspartate-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) such as Cu-Asp, Ce-Asp, and Cu/Ce-Asp. These MOFs facilitate the oxidation of a colorless substrate, 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), by reactive oxygen species (ROS) derived from hydrogen peroxide (HO), resulting in the formation of blue-colored oxidized TMB (ox-TMB).

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by senile plaques, amyloid-beta (Aβ), and neuroinflammation. The key targets in the treatment of AD are inhibiting the production of amyloid-beta (Aβ), sphingomyelinase, and inflammation. Among the mechanisms, sphingolipids (specifically Ceramides) are recognized as distinctive mediators associated with the pathology of AD.

Physiological premature aging of ovarian blood vessels leads to decline in fertility in middle-aged mice.

State Key Laboratory of Animal Biotech Breeding, College of Biological Sciences, China Agricultural University, Beijing, China.

Ovarian function declines significantly as females enter middle-age, but the mechanisms underlying this decline remain unclear. Here, we utilize whole-organ imaging to observe a notable decrease in ovarian blood vessel (oBV) density and angiogenesis intensity of middle-aged mice. This leads to a diminished blood supply to the ovaries, resulting in inadequate development and maturation of ovarian follicles.

Extracts of medicinal seeds can be used to synthesize nanoparticles (NPs) in more environmentally friendly ways than physical or chemical ways. For the first time, aqueous extract from unexploited grape seeds was used in this study to create Se/ZnO NPS utilizing a green technique, and their antimicrobial activity, cytotoxicity, antioxidant activities, and plant bio stimulant properties of the economic Vicia faba L. plant were evaluated.
