Efficacy and safety of daprodustat in patients on peritoneal dialysis in the ASCEND-D trial.

Nephrol Dial Transplant

November 2024

Department of Medicine and Nephrology, Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán, Mexico City, Mexico.

Background And Hypothesis: Daprodustat, an oral hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase inhibitor, is approved for treatment of anemia in dialysis patients with CKD in some parts of the world. This subgroup analysis examined the efficacy and safety of daprodustat versus darbepoetin alfa in patients with anemia of CKD undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD).

Methods: ASCEND-D (NCT02879305) was an open-label, Phase 3 trial; patients with CKD were randomized to daprodustat daily and epoetin alfa (HD patients) or darbepoetin alfa (PD patients).

Background/objectives: Zinc supplementation induces metallothionein, leading to reduced serum copper levels. Conversely, serum copper concentrations tend to rise with the use of HIF-PH inhibitors.

Methods: To establish a safe level of zinc supplementation that avoids copper deficiency, serum copper and zinc concentrations measured every three months were retrospectively analyzed over five years in 50 patients undergoing hemodialysis.

Overexpression of PIN1 in patients with severe COVID-19.

Diagn Microbiol Infect Dis

November 2024

Cellular and Molecular Research Center, Research Institute for prevention of Non-Communicable Disease, Qazvin University of Medical Sciences, Qazvin, Iran; Division of Medical Biotechnology, Department of Advanced Technologies in Medicine, Qazvin University of Medical Science, Qazvin, Iran. Electronic address:

This study aimed to investigate the significant expression of Peptidyl prolyl cis-trans isomerase (PIN1) as a key regulator of COVID-19 cycle. A quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) measured the expression levels of PIN1 in the serum of mild and severe patients and evaluated its association with clinical parameters. ROC curve analysis was performed to evaluate the expression of PIN1 for the diagnosis of COVID-19 between mild and severe patients.

Association of serum HIF-1α levels with coronary artery calcification in patients of non-dialysis chronic kidney disease.

Sci Rep

November 2024

Department of Nephrology, Hebei General Hospital, Xinhua District, No. 348, Heping West Road, Shijiazhuang, 050000, Hebei, China.

Vascular calcification is the main cause of death in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The study aims to investigate the risk factor affecting coronary artery calcification (CAC), and the relationship between serum hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) levels and CAC in non-dialysis CKD patients. One hundred and twenty-three patients were selected in the final analysis.

Inhibition of alternative complement system and prolyl hydroxylase ameliorates anaemia of inflammation.

Inflammopharmacology

November 2024

Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Zydus Research Centre, Zydus Lifesciences Limited, Sarkhej Bavla NH 8A, Moraiya, Ahmedabad, 382210, India.

Chronic diseases associated with inflammation cause early destruction of RBCs. Complement system, part of innate immunity, is involved in such RBC destruction. Persistent inflammation causes kidney injury, leading to reduced erythropoietin release and functional iron deficiency, causing anaemia.
