Objective: Candidal species identification in malignant and potentially malignant oral lesions with antifungal susceptibility.

Materials And Methods: Oral candidal carriage, strain diversity, and antifungal susceptibility of were checked for the patients having oral cancer or precancer reporting to the clinics for 1½ year. Statistically significant patients were selected and a control group was taken. A total of 105 individuals were selected and divided into three different groups. Salivary samples were taken from all the individuals. detection was done using Sabouraud's agar and candidal species detection on CHROMagar. antifungal sensitivity was done using antifungal disc diffusion method.

Results: was isolated from 88.6% of patients with oral cancer and 45.7% in oral precancerous group. was the predominant species found in 100% of oral precancerous and 71% in oral cancerous patients. Other a species found were (9.7%) and (19.6%). Antifungal susceptibility showed 4.3% sensitivity to fluconazole and 100% sensitivity to amphotericin B and nystatin.

Conclusion: Oral carriage was higher in oral cancerous group and majority of them were sensitive to amphotericin B and nystatin.

Extracellular hydrolytic activity (phospholipase, protease and hemolysin production) was evaluated in 178 strains of potentially pathogenic ascomycetous (Candida parapsilosis, Candida tropicalis) and basidiomycetous (Rhodotorula mucilaginosa) yeasts isolated from the excreta of Mew Gulls. Two bird colonies, one nesting in a natural habitat and the other in an urban habitat at the landfill, were studied simultaneously during their 7-month breeding season. Significant differences in phospholipase and protease production were found between natural and anthropophized strains.

A Narrative Review of Invasive Candidiasis in the Intensive Care Unit.

Ther Adv Pulm Crit Care Med

December 2024

Department of Intensive Care Medicine, Multidisciplinary Intensive Care Research Organization, (MICRO), St James' Hospital, Dublin, Ireland.

species is the most common cause of invasive fungal infection in the critically ill population admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Numerous risk factors for developing invasive candidiasis (IC) have been identified, and some, like the breach of protective barriers, abound within the ICU. Given that IC carries a significant mortality, morbidity, and healthcare cost burden, early diagnosis and treatment have become an essential topic of discussion.

The (1,3)-β-D-glucan use for invasive candidiasis diagnosis in non-neutropenic critically ill patients: a prospective cohort study.

Unlabelled: Introduction Invasive candidiasis (IC) is a widespread infection in intensive care. As culture-based diagnostic techniques take several days before positivity and leaks of sensitivity. (1,3)-β-D-glucan (BDG) was proposed as a mycological criterion for IC diagnosis in selected patients.

The appropriate nutrient conditions for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans dual-species biofilm formation in vitro.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Department of Biological and Medical Sciences, Charles University, Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové, 2089, Zborovská, Hradec Králové, 500 03, Czech Republic.

Polymicrobial biofilms, the reason for most chronic wound infections, play a significant role in increasing antibiotic resistance. The in vivo effectiveness of the new anti-biofilm therapy is conditioned by the profound evaluation using appropriate in vitro biofilm models. Since nutrient availability is crucial for in vitro biofilm formation, this study is focused on the impact of four selected cultivation media on the properties of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans dual-species biofilms.

Introduction: In solid-organ transplant (SOT) recipients, while survival rates have improved with immunosuppressive therapies, the risk of opportunistic infections has also increased. This study aimed to evaluate the frequency of pneumonia, identify microbiological factors, investigate diagnostic methods, and analyse prognosis.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective study was conducted to identify adult SOT recipients referred to the pulmonary diseases department with a preliminary pneumonia diagnosis between 2011 and 2019.
