[Left ventricular non-compaction: What should be known!].

Ann Cardiol Angeiol (Paris)

Service de cardiologie, hôpital Habib Thameur, Tunis 2040, Tunisie; Faculté de médecine de Tunis, Tunisie.

Published: April 2019

Isolated non-compaction of the left ventricle (NCVG) is a rare congenital cardiomyopathy resulting from the shutdown of normal embryogenesis of the myocardium. Its main feature is the existence of many deep heart-related ventricular trabeculations, generally located at the level of the apex of the left ventricle. Diagnosis is based on echocardiography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and may be difficult in the atypical forms. The clinical presentation and the prognosis are very variable. Familial forms are not rare, ordering a family screening.

Berlin Heart EXCOR sVAD implantation technique for neonates and infants with functionally univentricular ductal-dependent systemic circulation.

Multimed Man Cardiothorac Surg

January 2025

Congenital Heart Center, Division of Cardiovascular Surgery, Department of Surgery, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, USA.

The Berlin Heart EXCOR is a pulsatile paracorporeal ventricular assist device (VAD) for neonates, infants, children and adults with congenital or acquired severe ventricular dysfunction. Berlin Heart EXCOR VADs are routinely used as either a bridge to a cardiac transplantation, or occasionally as a bridge to ventricular recovery. Our programmatic philosophy is to bridge neonates and infants with functionally univentricular ductal-dependent systemic circulation or functionally univentricular ductal-dependent pulmonary circulation who are at high risk for staged palliation because of important cardiac risk factors with a single-ventricle VAD (sVAD) as a bridge to a cardiac transplant.

Cardiac sarcoidosis; update for the heart failure specialist.

Curr Opin Cardiol

January 2025

Division of Cardiology, University of Ottawa Heart Institute, University of Ottawa, Faculty of Medicine, Tier 1 Clinical Research Chair in Cardiac Electrophysiology, Ottawa, ON, Canada.

Purpose Of Review: This review presents contemporary data on epidemiology, common presentations, investigations and diagnostic algorithms, treatment and prognosis. It particularly focuses on topics of most relevance to heart failure specialists, including what left ventricle (LV) function changes can be expected after treatment and outcomes to all standard and advanced heart failure therapies.

Recent Findings: Around 5% of sarcoidosis patients have clinically manifest cardiac sarcoidosis (CS), presenting with significant arrhythmias (such as conduction disturbances and ventricular arrhythmias) or newly developed unexplained heart failure.

Application of elastic net for clinical outcome prediction and classification in progressive supranuclear palsy: A multicenter cohort study.

Parkinsonism Relat Disord

January 2025

Department of Neurology, Seoul Metropolitan Government-Seoul National University Boramae Medical Center, Seoul National University College of Medicine, Seoul, South Korea. Electronic address:

Background: Previous studies have used machine learning to identify clinically relevant atrophic regions in progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). This study applied Elastic Net (EN) in PSP to uncover key atrophic patterns, offering a novel approach to understanding its pathology.

Methods: This study included baseline data from 74 patients with PSP enrolled in the Study of Comprehensive ANd multimodal marker-based cohort of PSP (SCAN-PSP, NCT05579301) in Seoul between January 2022 and August 2023.

Dosimetric Planning Comparison for Left Ventricle Avoidance in Non-small Cell Lung Cancer Radiotherapy.

Cureus

December 2024

Physics and Engineering, London Regional Cancer Program, London, CAN.

Introduction: Radiation may unintentionally injure myocardial tissue, potentially leading to radiation-induced cardiac disease (RICD), with the net benefit of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) radiotherapy (RT) due to the proximity of the lung and heart. RTOG-0617 showed a greater reduction in overall survival (OS) comparing higher doses to standard radiation doses in NSCLC RT. VHeart has been reported as an OS predictor in the first- and fifth-year follow-ups.

Background: Children with Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) usually present with right heart abnormalities, however much is not known if these children presents with left ventricular dysfunction.

Objectives: This article is aimed to ascertain the left ventricular function of children with TOF compared with those without any congenital heart disease. It also elicits the correlation if any, between left ventricular mass and descending aorta blood flow.
