The concept of botanical integrity (BI), introduced previously in issue 106, involves the determination of identity, homogeneity, bioactivity, and safety of plant-derived materials designated for human consumption. It goes beyond previously established quality control principles. The inaugural article in this series described the three major domains of expertise that are required to assess BI (as noted in Figure 1): botanical examination (botany), phytochemical analysis (chemistry), and biological efficacy and safety assessments (bioactivity, which encompasses the fields of pharmacology and toxicology).

Oxidative Stress and Autophagy: Unraveling the Hidden Threat to Boars' Fertility.

Antioxidants (Basel)

December 2024

Hunan Collaborative Innovation Center for Utilization of Botanical Functional Ingredients, College of Animal Science and Technology, Hunan Agricultural University, Changsha 410128, China.

This review systematically examines the influence of oxidative stress on the reproductive function of male livestock, with a particular focus on the modulation of autophagy. Spermatogenesis, a highly precise biological process, is vulnerable to a range of internal and external factors, among which oxidative stress notably disrupts autophagic processes within the testes. This disruption results in diminished sperm quality, impaired testosterone synthesis, and compromised integrity of the blood-testis barrier.

This research investigates potential mechanisms of novel magnetic field (MF) treatments in inhibiting cell-wall-degrading enzymes, aiming to reduce weight loss and preserve the post-harvest quality of tomatoes ( L.) as a climacteric fruit. The optimization of the processing parameters, including MF intensity (1, 2, 3 mT), frequency (0, 50, 100 Hz), and duration (10, 20, 30 min), was accomplished by applying an orthogonal array design.

Sphingolipid remodeling in the plasma membrane is essential for osmotic stress tolerance in Arabidopsis.

Plant Physiol

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Biocontrol, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Plant Stress Biology, School of Life Sciences, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou 510275, P R China.

Osmotic stress caused by drought, salinity, or cold conditions is an important abiotic factor that decreases membrane integrity and causes cell death, thus decreasing plant growth and productivity. Remodeling cell membrane composition via lipid turnover can counter the loss of membrane integrity and cell death caused by osmotic stress. Sphingolipids are important components of eukaryotic membrane systems; however, how sphingolipids participate in plant responses to osmotic stress remains unclear.

Preparation of protein and its preventive effect on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in mice.

Food Funct

January 2025

Institute of Edible Fungi, Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences, National Engineering Research Center of Edible Fungi, Key Laboratory of Edible Fungi Resources and Utilization (South), Ministry of Agriculture, 201403, China.

is a valuable edible fungus with multidimensional bioactivities; however, research on protein and its beneficial effects on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) have been limited. In this study, protein (MEP) with 80.59% protein content was prepared, isolated, and characterized by the complete amino acid composition.

Electronic address:

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel condition that significantly impairs patient quality of life and remains incurable. Effective dietary management is crucial for both prevention and treatment. This study investigates the effects and mechanisms of Eurotium cristatum-fermented black tea (FBT) in a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced UC mouse model using transcriptome sequencing, immunofluorescence, and flow cytometry.
