The aim of this study was to enhance the thermal comfort properties of crude glycerol (CG) derived polyurethane foams (PUFs) using phase change materials (PCMs) (2.5⁻10.0% ()) to contribute to the reduction of the use of non-renewable resources and increase energy savings. The main challenge when adding PCM to PUFs is to combine the low conductivity of PUFs whilst taking advantage of the heat released/absorbed by PCMs to achieve efficient thermal regulation. The solution considered to overcome this limitation was to use expandable graphite (EG) (0.50⁻1.50% ()). The results obtained show that the use of PCMs increased the heterogeneity of the foams cellular structure and that the incorporation of PCMs and EG increased the stiffness of the ensuing composite PUFs acting as filler-reinforcing materials. However, these fillers also caused a substantial increase of the thermal conductivity and density of the ensuing foams which limited their thermal energy storage. Therefore, numerical simulations were carried using a single layer panel and the thermal and physical properties measured to evaluate the behavior of a composite PUF panel with different compositions, and guide future formulations to attain more effective results in respect to temperature buffering and temperature peak delay.

Given the rising frequency of thermal extremes (heatwaves and cold snaps) due to climate change, comprehending how a plant's origin affects its thermal tolerance breadth (TTB) becomes vital. We studied juvenile plants from three biomes: temperate coastal rainforest, desert and alpine. In controlled settings, plants underwent hot days and cold nights in a factorial design to examine thermal tolerance acclimation.

Two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic (FM) semiconductors hold great promise for the next generation spintronics devices. By performing density functional theory first-principles calculations, both CeF and CeFCl monolayers are studied, our calculation results show that CeF is a FM semiconductor with sizable magneto-crystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) and high Curie temperature (290 K), but a smaller band gap and thermal instability indicate that it is not applicable at higher temperature. Its isoelectronic analogue, the CeFCl monolayer, is a bipolar FM semiconductor, its dynamics, elastic, and thermal stability are confirmed, our results demonstrate promising applications of the CeFCl monolayer for next-generation spintronic devices owing to its high Curie temperature (200 K), stable semiconducting features, and stability.

In this work, using first-principles calculations, we predict a promising class of two-dimensional ferromagnetic semiconductors, namely Janus PrXY (X ≠ Y = Cl, Br, I) monolayers. Through first-principles calculations, we found that PrXY monolayers have excellent dynamic and thermal stability, and their band structures, influenced by magnetic exchange and spin-orbital coupling, exhibit significant valley polarization. Between and - valleys, the Berry curvature values are opposite to each other, resulting in the anomalous valley Hall effect.

Maillard reaction inducing amino acids degradation can adjust the flavour characteristic of black tea.

Food Res Int

February 2025

Tea Research Institute, China Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Key Laboratory of Tea Biology and Resource Utilization, Ministry of Agriculture, Hangzhou 310008, China. Electronic address:

Drying is the step that is to be used to adjust and control the formation of flavour and quality in black tea processing. In the present work, the comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC × GC-MS) and gas chromatography olfactometry with mass (GC-O-MS) were used to determine the dynamic change of the volatile compounds in black tea during drying at 90, 120, 150 °C for 1 h. Results showed that the ratio of esters and aldehydes largely declined when temperature was elevated from 90 °C to 150 °C, while the ratio of heterocycles was increased to 22.
