Although procyanidins constitute a unique class of polymeric plant secondary metabolites with a variety of biological properties including potent antioxidant activity, structure determination has been challenging, and structures of many complex procyanidins remain uncertain. To expedite the characterization of procyanidins, negative ion matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization high-energy collision-induced dissociation tandem time-of-flight (MALDI-ToF/ToF) mass spectra of 20 isolated procyanidins containing catechin and epicatechin subunits with degrees of polymerization up to five were obtained and evaluated. Structurally significant fragmentation pathways of singly charged, deprotonated molecules were identified representing quinone methide, heterocyclic ring fission, and retro-Diels-Alder fragmentation. The interpretation of the tandem mass spectra for sequencing A-type, B-type, mixed-type, linear, and branched procyanidins is explained using specific examples of each.

Our study identified high-molecular-weight compounds from Tityus serrulatus venom (TsV), and most of them have not yet been well explored. TsV was fractionated using FPLC system with different columns, analyzed by SDS-PAGE, and characterized by MALDI-TOF/TOF. Our study showed that TsV contains several high-molecular-weight compounds, including CRISPs, metalloproteinase and hyaluronidase.

Rationale: Plasmids can play a major role in the survival of pathogenic bacteria. Plasmids are acquired through horizontal gene transfer resulting in their spread across various strains, species and genera of bacteria. Colicins are bacterial protein toxins expressed by plasmid genes and released against co-located bacterial competitors.

Mammary Gland Protein-40 (MGP-40), also known as chitinase-3-like protein 1 (CHI3L1), is involved in critical biological processes such as inflammation, tissue remodeling, and cell proliferation, especially during the involution phase of the mammary gland. This study aimed to explore the molecular mechanisms of MGP-40 by identifying its novel interacting partners in buffalo mammary epithelial cells (BuMECs). Stable overexpression of MGP-40 in BuMECs was achieved through transfection with the pCIneo-MGP-40 vector, followed by G418 selection and confirmation by Western blot analysis.

This study aims to characterize idiopathic epiretinal membrane (iERM) using proteomic analysis to enhance diagnosis and treatment strategies. In a prospective case-control clinical trial, vitreous fluids (VF) from twelve iERM patients were collected during surgery and analyzed by 2DE-based MALDI TOF-TOF MS/MS. PANTHER and STRING analyses were performed to investigate the biological relationships between the identified proteins and to determine relevant cellular pathways.

A comprehensive LC-MS study examined the venom components of the solitary scoliid wasp . Online mass fingerprinting showed that crude venom contains 25 small molecules (amino acids, biogenic amines, and nucleosides/nucleotides) and 45 peptides with MW 400-2700. The small molecules were identified by elemental composition analysis, and peptide sequences were determined by ESI-MS/MS and MALDI-TOF/TOF MS analyses.
