The silicon dioxide (SiO)-coated bismuth vanadate (BiVO) composites as visible-driven-photocatalysts were successfully synthesized by the co-precipitation method. The effects of SiO coating on the structure, optical property, morphology and surface properties of the composites were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Brunauer-Emmette-Teller (BET) measurements. The photocatalytic activity of monoclinic BiVO and BiVO/SiO composites were evaluated according to the degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye aqueous solution under visible light irradiation. The SiOcoated BiVO composites showed the enhancing photocatalytic activity approximately threefold in comparison with the single phase BiVO.

Photoelectrochemical cells (PECs) can directly utilize solar energy to drive chemical reactions to produce fuels and chemicals. Oxide-based photoelectrodes in general exhibit enhanced stability against photocorrosion, which is a critical advantage for building a sustainable PEC. However, most oxide-based semiconductors are n-type, and p-type oxides that can be used as photocathodes are limited.

Luminescent materials doped with rare-earth (RE) ions have emerged as powerful tools in thermometry, offering high sensitivity and accuracy. However, challenges remain, particularly in maintaining efficient luminescence at elevated temperatures. This study investigates the thermometric properties of BiVO: Yb/Er (BVO: Er/Yb) nanophosphors synthesized the sol-gel method.

At present, the mechanism difference between tetragonal BiVO (t-BiVO) and monoclinic BiVO (m-BiVO) coupled peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to realize photocatalysis is still unclear. In this study, m-BiVO and t-BiVO were obtained by adjusting the bismuth-vanadium ratio in the precursor solution (Bi:V = 3:1; 1:1; 1:2 and 1:3). The results of photocatalytic experiments showed that both t-BiVO and m-BiVO had certain activation effects on PMS, and the prepared monoclinic B1V2 has the strongest photocatalytic performance.

Combined experimental and first principles look into (Ce, Mo) doped BiVO.

Materials Science Research Laboratory, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Dhaka, Dhaka-1000, Bangladesh.

Here we investigated the effects of Ce and Mo doping on hydrothermally synthesized bismuth vanadate BiVO nanoparticles (NPs). The existence of monoclinic scheelite and tetragonal zircon phases of NPs was validated from Rietveld refinement of the powdered X-ray diffraction, room temperature Raman, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The co-doping of Bi and V sites with respective Ce and Mo dopants in a mixed tetragonal zircon and monoclinic scheelite phases of BiVO lattice was corroborated from high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Article Synopsis
  • BiVO is a stable photocatalytic material but struggles with photocatalytic activity under visible light; this study explores using surfactants to improve its efficiency for degrading tetracycline (TC).
  • The research shows that surfactant-modified BiVO, especially BiVO-CTAC with a specific morphology, enhances light absorption and reduces the energy band gap compared to unmodified BiVO.
  • The findings indicate that the surfactants influence the formation and structure of BiVO, leading to better charge separation and increased degradation efficiency of TC, highlighting a new method for synthesizing effective photocatalysts.
