Reciprocal relationships between adolescent mental health difficulties and alcohol consumption.

Eur Child Adolesc Psychiatry

January 2025

School of Psychology, Centre for Innovation in Mental Health, University of Southampton, University Road, Southampton, SO17 1BJ, UK.

The directionality of the relationship between adolescent alcohol consumption and mental health difficulties remains poorly understood. This study investigates the longitudinal relationship between alcohol use frequency, internalizing and externalizing symptoms from the ages of 11 to 17. We conducted a random-intercept cross-lagged panel model across three timepoints (ages: 11yrs, 14yrs, 17yrs; 50.

Evidence for Multiple Independent Expansions of Fox Gene Families Within Flatworms.

J Mol Evol

January 2025

Faculty of Biology, Institute of Evolutionary Biology, University of Warsaw, Ul. Żwirki I Wigury 101, 02-089, Warsaw, Poland.

Expansion and losses of gene families are important drivers of molecular evolution. A recent survey of Fox genes in flatworms revealed that this superfamily of multifunctional transcription factors, present in all animals, underwent extensive losses and expansions during platyhelminth evolution. In this paper, I analyzed Fox gene complement in four additional species of platyhelminths, that represent early-branching lineages in the flatworm phylogeny: catenulids (Stenostomum brevipharyngium and Stenostomum leucops) and macrostomorphs (Macrostomum hystrix and Macrostomum cliftonense).

Maternal exposure to nicotine causes oxidative stress and inflammatory changes in the ovaries of adult rats' offspring.

Reprod Toxicol

January 2025

Developmental Biology Laboratory, Department of Morphology and Genetic, Federal University of Sao Paulo (UNIFESP), Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Electronic address:

Nicotine is one of the most toxic substances found in cigarettes, but also found in chewing tobacco gum, patches and vaping products (electronic cigarettes). In addition to being a highly addictive chemical, it is capable of reducing fertility in men and women. In the ovaries, it can induce morphological changes and impair the formation of follicles, being a possible cause of changes in the reproductive cycle and anticipation of menopause in women whose mothers smoked during pregnancy.

There is an urgent need to develop effective and sustainable methods to decrease sulfonamide (SA) contamination of soil. Herein, a non-homogeneous system of zero-valent metal-biochar-based composites was proposed and tested for persulfate (PS) activation. This system employed zero-valent iron (Fe) as an electron donor to catalyze the cleavage of the OO bond in PS, thereby generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) that degrade SAs.

When acute pain persists, it is said to become chronic after 3 months. Considerable interest has focused on why acute pain appears to transition to chronic pain in some cases, but not all, especially when it becomes disabling. We examine our current understanding of the processes involved in the progression from an acute injury to disabling chronic pain.
