Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease with complex etiology involving multiple factors. Current treatment methods are highly limited and there is a strong need for the development of safer and efficacious agents. We have previously shown that a water-soluble extract derived from hardy kiwifruit , called PG102, shows potent anti-inflammatory effects. Based on its reported biological activities, the effects of PG102 were examined on imiquimod-induced psoriasis-like skin inflammation. Our results showed that topical application of PG102 ameliorates clinical symptoms of psoriasis, reducing skin thickness and Interleukin (IL)-17A level in draining lymph nodes without causing any adverse effects. Treatment with PG102 on cytokine-stimulated HaCaT cells suppressed hyperproliferation and downregulated the expression of various chemokines and antimicrobial peptides known to induce neutrophil infiltration. These anti-inflammatory activities of PG102 were mediated via inhibition of NF-κB and signal transducer of activation (STAT) signaling. We also found decreased neutrophil chemotaxis both in vitro and in vivo. Taken together, PG102 has potential as a safe and effective reagent for the treatment of psoriasis.

Hearing loss is one of the most common sensory disorders in humans, and a large number of cases are due to ear cell damage caused by ototoxic drugs including anticancer agents, such as cisplatin. The recent literature reported that hearing loss is promoted by an excessive generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cochlea cells, which causes oxidative stress. Recently, polysaccharides from the cyanobacterium showed many biological activities, including antioxidant activity, suggesting their potential use to combat hearing loss.

To improve the high-value application of millet bran, a water-soluble polysaccharide was extracted from fermented millet bran (FMBP) by using fermentation. A neutral polysaccharide, FMBP-1, was separated and purified from FMBP using an anion exchange column. Its structure and antioxidant activity in vitro were characterized and determined.

This study compared the effectiveness of urea-containing and urea-free L-cysteine solutions in extracting high-quality feather keratin and evaluated commercial proteases for producing keratin-derived bioactive peptides. The urea-assisted extraction was crucial for achieving high structural integrity and yield of soluble keratin. The keratin isolate exhibited oil-holding capacity of 9.

Anthocyanins are a type of water-soluble pigments widely distributed in colorful plants, which have been extensively used in food and cosmetics industry. The current production of anthocyanins heavily depends on extraction from plant materials, which leads to low purity and inconsistency among batches. Compared with conventional extraction, microorganism-mediated production of anthocyanins has advantages such as a short production cycle, high purity, low waste production, low energy requirements, and consistency between different batches.

Periweissella beninensis LMG 25373, belonging to the recently established Periweissella genus, exhibits unique motility and high adhesion capabilities, indicating significant probiotic potential, including resilience under simulated gastrointestinal conditions. This study demonstrates for the first time that P. beninensis LMG 25373^T produces a dextran-type exopolysaccharide (EPS) with a distinctive high degree of branching (approximately 71 % of α-(1 → 6)-linkages and 29 % α-(1 → 3)-linkages).
