Published: February 2019

After an overview of the Food and Drugs Administration's 2012 draft guidance on enrichment strategies for clinical trials to support drug/biologic approval, we describe subsequent advances in adaptive enrichment designs in this direction. We also provide a concrete application in the enrichment design of the Diffusion and Perfusion Imaging Evaluation for Understanding Stroke Evolution 3 trial comparing a new endovascular treatment with standard of care for ischemic stroke patients.

After tooth extraction, alveolar bone absorbs unevenly, leading to soft tissue collapse, which hinders full regeneration. Bone loss makes it harder to do dental implants and repairs. Inspired by the biological architecture of bone, a deformable SIS/HA (Small intestinal submucosa/Hydroxyapatite) composite hydrogel coaxial scaffold was designed to maintain bone volume in the socket.

Genome-resolved analysis of Serratia marcescens SMTT infers niche specialization as a hydrocarbon-degrader.

DNA Res

January 2025

Biochemistry Research Lab (Rm216), Dept. of Life Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology, The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine. Trinidad and Tobago - West Indies.

Bacteria that are chronically exposed to high levels of pollutants demonstrate genomic and corresponding metabolic diversity that complement their strategies for adaptation to hydrocarbon-rich environments. Whole genome sequencing was carried out to infer functional traits of Serratia marcescens SMTT recovered from soil contaminated with crude oil. The genome size (Mb) was 5,013,981 with a total gene count of 4,842.

Understanding the microbial processes on carbon brushes that accelerate methanogenesis of long-chain fatty acids in anaerobic digestion.

Lipids offer high energy recovery potential during anaerobic digestion (AD), but their hydrolysis generates long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs), which are difficult to biodegrade. The introduction of microbial electrolysis cells has been widely recognized as a promising strategy to enhance AD. However, it is still under debate whether the electrical circuit needs to be connected, as certain electrodes with large specific surface areas have been reported to enhance direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) without requiring an external power supply.
