Background: One of the undesirable complications that might occur after breast augmentation with silicone implants is capsular contracture. In its etiology, the relations between mast cells and myofibroblasts play an important role in collagen synthesis. Mast cells are able to activate fibroblasts into myofibroblasts, through paracrine secretions, inducing collagen production. The objectives of this study were to analyze the myofibroblast concentration through the α-SMA immunomarker and evaluate the intensity of mast cell expression against the C-Kit immunomarker.
Material And Method: Sixty-four Wistar rats were used, divided into two groups (polyurethane foam and textured surface) with 32 animals in each. The animals received silicone implants on the back, below the panniculus carnosus, and after the determined period, they were killed and the capsules formed around the implants were studied. The capsules were analyzed employing the immunohistochemical technique, with the α-SMA and C-Kit immunomarkers in subgroups of 30, 50, 70 and 90 days.
Results: The myofibroblast concentration was higher in the polyurethane group when compared to the textured group (30 days p = 0.105; 50 days p = 0.247; 70 days p = 0.014 and 90 days p = 0.536). The intensity of mast cell expression was more pronounced in the polyurethane group when compared to the textured group (30 days p = 0.798; 50 days p = 0.537; 70 days p = 0.094 and 90 days p = 0.536).
Conclusions: Polyurethane-coated implants induced higher concentrations of myofibroblasts and higher expression of mast cells, when compared to the textured surface implants.

Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) induced by rapid bacterial colonization and biofilm formation on urinary catheters is a key issue that urgently needs to be addressed. To prevent CAUTI, many contact-killing, non-leaching coatings have been developed for the surfaces of silicone catheters. However, due to the chemical inertness of the silicone substrate, most current coatings lack adhesion and are unstable under external forces.

Introduction: Silicone Lymphadenopathy (SL) is a complication of breast implants that involves migration of silicone to nearby soft tissue/lymph nodes. Data on its clinical features and management is scarce. We aimed to identify the clinical presentation and management of SL.

Background: Direct mechanical ventricular actuation (DMVA) with the Anstadt cup is effective for non-blood-contacting biventricular support. Pneumatic regulation of a silicone device augments ventricular pump function. Vacuum attachment facilitates diastolic augmentation critical for biventricular support.

Silicone rubber (SiR) has a wide range of medical applications, but it lacks antimicrobial properties, leading to potential infection issues with related implants or medical devices. Most studies focus on adding anti-bacterial agents or surface modification, which usually result in composites with anti-bacterial properties, rather than synthesizing SiR with intrinsically antimicrobial performances. To tackle this issue, a double substituted bornyl-siloxane crosslinker (BC) is designed.

The reverse scan technique offers several advantages, such as improvements of accuracy and visibility of critical anatomical structures, minimizing chair time, and providing better patient comfort. This was a case report successfully employing the reverse scan technique. A 72-year-old male patient desired to restore his teeth in both jaws, as he experienced difficulty eating and had never worn dentures.
