The effect of fiber content and sintering temperature on sintering behavior and mechanical properties of mullite fibers/hydroxyapatite composites was studied. The composites were fabricated by hydrothermal synthesis and pressureless sintering. The amount of fibers was varied from 5 wt % to 15 wt % through hydrothermal synthesis, mullite fibers and hydroxyapatite composite powders were subsequently sintered at temperatures of 1150, 1250, and 1350 °C. The composites presented a more perturbed structure by increasing fiber content. Moreover, the composites experienced pore coalescence and exhibited a dense microstructure at elevated temperature. X-ray diffraction indicated that the composites underwent various chemical reactions and generated silicate glasses. The generation of silicate glasses increased the driving force of particle rearrangement and decreased the number of pores, which promoted densification of the composites. Densification typically leads to increased hardness and bending strength. The study proposes a densification mechanism and opens new insights into the sintering properties of these materials.

Purpose: This systematic review aims to assess the impact of different 3D printing orientations on the physico-mechanical properties, volumetric change, and accuracy of additively manufactured ceramic specimens, as well as their restorations.

Study Selection: The web database containing records for building orientation of 3D-printed ceramics until January 2024 was searched, with no language limitations. PRISMA 2020 guidelines were followed, and the risk of bias was evaluated using the modified CONSORT checklist for laboratory studies on dental materials.

Purpose: This study investigated the effects of femtosecond laser (FL) irradiation on the surface roughness and shear bond strength of high-translucency zirconia (6 mol% yttria-partially stabilized zirconia [6Y-PSZ]) and lithium disilicate (LiSiO) glass ceramics.

Methods: Fully sintered square-shaped specimens of 6Y-PSZ (7 groups; 20 specimens/group) and LiSiO (8 groups; 20 specimens/group) were surface-treated via sandblasting (50-μm alumina sand or glass beads) or FL irradiation (20- or 40-μm dot or cross-line patterns) or using Monobond Etch & Prime (Ivoclar Vivadent AG; only for LiSiO specimens). The surface roughness (arithmetic average [Sa] and developed interfacial area ratio [Sdr]) and shear bond strength after 24 h and 10,000 thermal cycles were measured and statistically analyzed.

Phase evolutions of sodium layered oxide cathodes during thermal fluctuations.

Chem Commun (Camb)

January 2025

College of Chemistry and Materials Engineering, Wenzhou University, Wenzhou 325035, China.

Layered transition metal oxide (NaTMO) cathodes are considered highly appropriate for the practical applications of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) owing to their facile synthesis and high theoretical capacity. Generally, the phase evolution behaviors of NaTMO during solid-state reactions at high temperature closely related to their carbon footprint, prime cost, and the eventual electrochemical properties, while the thermal stability in various desodiated states associated with wide temperature fluctuations are extremely prominent to the electrochemical properties and safety of SIB devices. Therefore, in this review, the influences of sintering conditions such as pyrolysis temperature, soaking time, and cooling rates on the phase formation patterns of NaTMO are summarized.

Robocasting calcium phosphate compounds as a novel approach to creating customized structures with interconnected pores not only overcomes the limitations of traditional fabrication methods of calcium phosphate substitutes but also boosts the potential for bone tissue regeneration. The ink development is a key step in 3D printing. In this study, different inks consisting of magnesium- and sodium-doped carbonated hydroxyapatite, β-tricalcium phosphate, and Pluronic F-127 were prepared to design biomimetic bone scaffolds.

The present investigation provides an easy and affordable strategy for fabrication of functional ceramics BiNaTiO-SrFeO (BNT-SrF5) thick films on a flexible, inexpensive and electrically integrated substrate using electrophoretic deposition process (EPD). EPD is a widely accepted, environmentally friendly method for applying coatings from a colloidal suspension to conductive substrates. Lead-free ferroelectric BNT-SrF5 powder was synthesized by solid state method to fabricate bulk samples and thick films (30-160 μm) by EPD process.
