To determine the relationship between alterations in the activity of the enzymes participating in antioxidative defense system and neurological soft signs (NSS) in schizophrenic patients with the first episode psychosis (S, n = 19), patients in relapse (S, n = 46), and healthy controls (HC, n = 20). NSS intensity and enzymatic plasma activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) were compared between S, S and HC subjects and a follow-up correlation analyses between the enzyme activities and NSS intensity was performed. NSS intensity was increased four times in schizophrenic patients compared with healthy controls. Activities of SOD and CAT were 40% decreased in S and these reductions were ameliorated by antipsychotic treatment. GPX activity was 20% decreased in both patient groups compared with controls. A negative correlation between NSS intensity and GPX activity was specifically found in the S patients. The data in this report argue that a reduction of GPX activity might be one of the causes for the emergence of NSS at the onset of schizophrenia, and provide the evidence that antipsychotic therapy can attenuate activity reductions of SOD and CAT, but not the activity reduction of GPX and the intensity of NSS.

Background: Reports indicate that depression is a common mental health issue following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Our prior research suggests that Nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3)-related neuroinflammation, modulated by glial cells such as astrocytes, is likely to play a crucial role in the progression of anxiety and cognitive dysfunction. However, there is limited understanding of the potential of astrocytic NLRP3 in treating depression under mild TBI condition.

Highly ordered ultrathin nanosheets (NSs) of Au(I)-Cys were fabricated through aggregation-induced supramolecular self-assembly triggered by an extended agitation in an alkaline environment. The synthesized Au(I)-Cys NSs exhibited intense luminescence and exceptional chirality. Remarkably, additions of biothiols to Au(I)-Cys NSs have significantly enhanced their luminescence emission, and circular dichroism properties coupled with morphological modulations into nanoflowers, nanodendrites, or closely packed aggregates.

As a noninvasive and label-free optical technique, Raman spectroscopy offers significant advantages in studying the structure and properties of biomacromolecules, as well as real-time changes in cellular molecular structure. However, its practical applications are hindered by weak scattering responses, low signal intensity, and poor spectral uniformity, which affect the subsequent accuracy of spectral analysis. To address these issues, we report a novel surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate based on a pyramidal pitted silicon (PPSi) array structure adhered with Au-shell Ag-core nanospheres (Au@Ag NSs).

Hot spots can generate intense local electromagnetic (EM) fields, thereby boosting diverse innovative applications. However, these applications may face challenges due to their subtle structural changes that can significantly impact their EM field strength. Herein, we report a large-scale synthesis of monodisperse, highly spherical, single crystalline (SC) Au nanospheres (Au NSs) with tunable sizes ranging from 38 to 92 nm for constructing uniform and reproducible hot spots with a nanosphere-on-mirror (NSoM) configuration.
