Manganese (Mn)-sensing riboswitches protect bacteria from Mn toxicity by upregulating expression of Mn exporters. The Mn aptamers share key features but diverge in other important elements, including within the metal-binding core. Although X-ray crystal structures of isolated aptamers exist, these structural snapshots lack crucial details about how the aptamer communicates the presence or absence of ligand to the expression platform.

Persistent effects of salience in visual working memory: Limits of cue-driven guidance.

J Exp Psychol Hum Percept Perform

January 2025

Faculte de Psychologie et des Sciences de l'Education, Universite de Geneve.

Visual working memory (VWM) is a core cognitive system enabling us to select and briefly store relevant visual information. We recently observed that more salient items were recalled more precisely from VWM and demonstrated that these effects of salience resisted manipulations of reward, probability, and selection history. Here, we investigated whether and how salience interacts with shifts of attention induced by pre- and retrocueing.

Aperiodic Pupil Fluctuations at Rest Predict Orienting of Visual Attention.

Psychophysiology

January 2025

Department of Psychology, Hangzhou Normal University, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China.

The aperiodic exponent of the power spectrum of signals in several neuroimaging modalities has been found to be related to the excitation/inhibition balance of the neural system. Leveraging the rich temporal dynamics of resting-state pupil fluctuations, the present study investigated the association between the aperiodic exponent of pupil fluctuations and the neural excitation/inhibition balance in attentional processing. In separate phases, we recorded participants' pupil size during resting state and assessed their attentional orienting using the Posner cueing tasks with different cue validities (i.

The selection and expression of conspicuous colorations in animals is often related to anti-predation strategies and sociosexual communication. The giant river prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man, 1879) is a species with three male morphotypes that vary in claws' coloration and the size of the animals. It has been suggested that male reproductive quality might be associated to their coloration, but evidence is still conflicting.
