Many edible plant extracts exhibit biological activities. For example, the ethanol extract of var. () inhibits acetylcholinesterase (AChE), and red ginseng is well known for promoting health. In this study the authors investigated the synergistic effect of and red ginseng extracts on AChE activity in vitro and in mouse brain tissues and trimethyltin (TMT)-induced cognitive impairment in a mouse model of TMT-induced neurodegeneration. A diet containing a mixture of and red ginseng extracts reversed learning and memory impairments in Y-maze and passive avoidance behavioral tests. In addition, the mixture inhibited AChE activity and lipid peroxidation synergistically.

Pollen-food allergy syndrome is an IgE-mediated allergic reaction arising from cross-reactive homologous allergens found in both food and pollen. Allergens, such as pathogenesis-related protein class 10 and profilin, usually trigger oropharyngeal itching and numbness in patients, whereas lipid transfer proteins tend to induce anaphylaxis. This article presents a case study of an individual with Artemisia pollen allergy who experienced anaphylaxis after consuming red fruit ginseng, a perennial herb belonging to the Campanulaceae family.

Researches regarding quality control of ginseng focusing on the lipids are rare. Herein, ultra-high-performance supercritical fluid chromatography/ion mobility-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPSFC/IM-QTOF-MS) combined with untargeted metabolomic analysis was utilized to holistically characterize and compare the lipidomic difference among 12 Panax-derived herbal medicines. The established UHPSFC/IM-QTOF-MS method, using a Torus 1-AA column with CO/CHOH (modifier) as the mobile phase, well resolved the ginseng lipidome within 30 min.

Objective: Myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury is associated with a significant reduction in the mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP, ΔΨm). Fluorescence-based assays are effective for labelling active mitochondria in living cells; their application in heart tissue, however, represents a challenge because of a low yield of viable cardiomyocytes after cardiac perfusion.
