The flower buds of , known traditionally as Xinyi, exert anti-inflammatory effects against inflammatory lung diseases such as COPD. Lignans isolated from Xinyi are an important group of plant-derived anti-inflammatory compounds. However, the mechanisms of action underlying their protective effects against COPD are not yet fully understood. Here, we showed that seven lignans (lignans 1-7) obtained from a CHCl fraction of Xinyi effectively suppress the inflammatory response in CSC-stimulated airway epithelial cells () and in a mouse model of COPD established by exposure to CS and LPS. The CHCl fraction was found to inhibit CSC-induced IL-6 expression in human airway epithelial cells and to suppress the infiltration of inflammatory cells (neutrophils and macrophages) and secretion of inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the mouse model. Similarly, each of the seven lignans isolated from the CHCl fraction also suppressed the infiltration of inflammatory cells (neutrophils and macrophages) and secretion of inflammatory mediators such as reactive oxygen species (ROS), TNF-α, and IL-6 . Notably, all lignan compounds significantly suppressed both extracellular signal-related kinase (ERK) and Akt phosphorylation levels in CSC-stimulated human lung mucoepidermoid carcinoma (NCI-H292) cells. Of these, lignan 1 (dimethylpinoresinol) inhibited the expression of CSC-induced inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, -6, and -8) in a dose-dependent manner by suppressing the activation of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and its downstream effectors, including ERK and Akt, in NCI-H292 cells. Our results show that the lignans isolated from Xinyi may prevent airway inflammatory diseases through the suppression of EGFR and its downstream effectors.

One new Sesquiterpene wikstromicrol (1), one new lignan (7R, 8S, 8'S)-9-acetoxyl (-)-isolariciresinol (8), and twelve known compounds were isolated from the branches and leaves of Wikstroemia micrantha. The structures of new compounds were elucidated by extensive interpretation of spectroscopic data and quantum chemical calculations of ECD spectra. The bioactivity assay showed that compounds 6 and 7 had weak cytotoxicity against MCF-7, HCT-116, and HL-60 cell lines with IC50 values ranging from 33.

L. (noni) is native to the tropical and semitropical areas and has been commercially available in health food stores and chain grocery stores specializing in natural foods, recently. Noni seeds are discarded as waste products through the industrial production of noni juice even though their bioactivity components might be a potential source of functional foods.

(±)-Melichuniiones A and B (1 and 2), two novel enantiomeric pairs of lignan-phloroglucinol hybrids with an unprecedented beadlike core were isolated from the leaves of , together with new analogues 3-6. Compounds 1 and 2 possess a unique dispiro [furan-2,5'-cyclopenta[]furan-2',3''-furan] 5/5/5/5 tetracyclic skeleton. Their structures were established by extensive spectroscopic analyses, single crystal X-ray diffraction, and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) calculations.

Food allergens are the key triggers of allergic diarrhea, causing damage to the immune-rich ileum. This weakens the mucosal barrier and tight junctions, increases intestinal permeability, and exacerbates allergen exposure, thereby worsening the condition. Sesamin, a natural lignan isolated from sesame seed, has shown potential in regulating immune responses, but its effects on intestinal health remain unclear.
