Objectives:: The aim of this study was to determine the shape and area of the pharyngoesophageal segment (PES) during swallowing using 320-row area detector computed tomography, which can acquire a volume data set covering a 16-cm area in a single rotation.

Methods:: Twenty healthy subjects were scanned during swallowing 3, 10, and 20 mL of honey-thick barium (5% w/v). PES was identified using cross-sectional images of 0.5-mm slice thickness, and the area in each section was measured.

Results:: The PES opening area and the anteroposterior and lateral diameters of the PES were volume dependent. However, there was no statistical difference in anteroposterior and lateral diameters between 3- and 10-mL bolus swallowing.

Conclusions:: Three hundred twenty-row area detector computed tomography provided new information about PES. This technique will facilitate further understanding of the mechanisms of PES opening and swallowing physiology.

Results from applying an advanced spatial-unfolding technique to outdoor-trial data acquired with a Silicon photomultiplier-based Compton Telescope for Safety and Security (SCoTSS) gamma imager during perimeter survey of a distributed La-140 source lying within a 500 m x 500 m exclusion zone are presented. A synthetic-data version of the experiment was also modelled using Monte Carlo simulations and reconstructed. For both experimental and synthetic data the method faithfully reproduces the shape of the activity distribution, and for synthetic data the total activity is reproduced as well.

Background: Different modes of motor acquisition, including motor execution (ME), motor imagery (MI), action observation (AO), and mirror visual feedback (MVF), are often used when learning new motor behavior and in clinical rehabilitation.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate differences in brain activation during different motor acquisition modes among healthy young adults.

Methods: This cross-sectional study recruited 29 healthy young adults.

Flow cessation leads to severe degradation of river corridor landscape structure, habitat quality, and ecological functions. This study focuses on the representative river with ceased flow in northern China, the Yongding River plain section. Utilizing long-term, high-resolution satellite remote sensing imagery and the InVEST model, we analyzed the spatiotemporal evolution of landscape structure and habitat quality (HQ) before and after river corridor flow cessation over the past 50 years.

In conventional nondispersive infrared (NDIR) gas sensors, a wide-spectrum IR source or detector must be combined with a narrowband filter to eliminate the interference of nontarget gases. Therefore, the multiplexed NDIR gas sensor requires multiple pairs of narrowband filters, which is not conducive to miniaturization and integration. Although plasmonic metamaterials or multilayer thin-film structures are widely applied in spectral absorption filters, realizing high-performance, large-area, multiband, and compact filters is rather challenging.
