One out of every six American women has been the victim of a sexual assault in their lifetime. However, the DNA casework backlog continues to increase outpacing the nation's capacity since DNA evidence processing in sexual assault casework remains a bottleneck due to laborious and time-consuming differential extraction of victim's and perpetrator's cells. Additionally, a significant amount (60-90%) of male DNA evidence may be lost with existing procedures. Here, a microfluidic method is developed that selectively captures sperm using a unique oligosaccharide sequence (Sialyl-Lewis), a major carbohydrate ligand for sperm-egg binding. This method is validated with forensic mock samples dating back to 2003, resulting in 70-92% sperm capture efficiency and a 60-92% reduction in epithelial fraction. Captured sperm are then lysed on-chip and sperm DNA is isolated. This method reduces assay-time from 8 h to 80 min, providing an inexpensive alternative to current differential extraction techniques, accelerating identification of suspects and advancing public safety.

Cancer, a disease threatening human life, is caused by the disturbance of the normal cell cycle, which results in the spontaneous growth of normal and malignant cells, the lack of differentiation between the two, and consequently malignant growths. Nowadays, various synthetic agents are applied for cancer therapy; nevertheless, reports have confirmed that these chemical agents are associated with various adverse complications. This experimental study was designed to assess the anti-tumor activities of zinc nanoparticles (ZnNPs) green synthesized by the () extract against Ehrlich solid tumors (EST) in mice.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease of cartilage, and exosome derived from mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are considered promising for treating inflammatory musculoskeletal disorders, although their mechanisms are not fully understood. This study aimed to investigate the effects of exosomes derived from canine bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (cBMSCs-Exos) on the expression of inflammatory factors and genes related cartilage matrix metabolism in IL-1β-induced canine chondrocytes. Canine BMSCs were isolated and characterized for surface markers and trilineage differentiation.

Background: The apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) has been reported as a quantitative biomarker for assessing the aggressiveness of upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC), but it has typically been used only with mean ADC values. This study aims to develop a radiomics model using ADC maps to differentiate UTUC grades by incorporating texture features and to compare its performance with that of mean ADC values.
Methods: A total of 215 patients with histopathologically confirmed UTUC were enrolled retrospectively and divided into training and test sets.

The chemical similarities between trivalent actinides [An(III)] and lanthanides [Ln(III)] present a significant challenge in differentiating and separating them, which is a key step toward closing the nuclear fuel cycle. However, the existing separation approaches commonly suffer from demerits such as inadequate separation factors, limited stripping efficiency, and undesired coextraction. In this study, a novel unsymmetrical phenanthroline-derived amide-triazine (Et-Tol-CyMe-ATPhen) extractant was first designed and then screened with theoretical computation.
