Diabetes Risk After Treatment for Childhood and Young Adult Cancer.

Diabetes Care

January 2025

Clinical Population and Sciences Department, Leeds Institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine, University of Leeds, U.K.

Objective: Diabetes is a potential late consequence of childhood and young adult cancer (CYAC) treatment. Causative treatments associated with diabetes have been identified in retrospective cohort studies but have not been validated in population-based cohorts. Our aim was to define the extent of diabetes risk and explore contributory factors for its development in survivors of CYAC in the United Kingdom.

Distributed lag models (DLMs) estimate the health effects of exposure over multiple time lags prior to the outcome and are widely used in time series studies. Applying DLMs to retrospective cohort studies is challenging due to inconsistent lengths of exposure history across participants, which is common when using electronic health record databases. A standard approach is to define subcohorts of individuals with some minimum exposure history, but this limits power and may amplify selection bias.

Background: This study aims to establish the characteristics of second primary neoplasms (SPNs) and the long-term follow-up status of a tertiary pediatric oncology center.

Methods: Records of 1799 patients followed up in the pediatric oncology division between January 1981 and December 2022 were evaluated retrospectively.

Results: Thirty-four (1.

Immunization rates of maternal influenza vaccination during pregnancy remain suboptimal, with concerns about potential harm to the mothers and their offspring. We conducted a population-based cohort study, using mother-child linked database in Korea: (a) maternal cohort between December 2019, and March 2022; (b) neonatal cohort between September 2020, and June 2021. Exposure was defined as influenza vaccination during pregnancy.

Efficient stochastic simulation of piecewise-deterministic Markov processes and its application to the Morris-Lecar model of neural dynamics.

Piecewise-deterministic Markov processes combine continuous in time dynamics with jump events, the rates of which generally depend on the continuous variables and thus are not constants. This leads to a problem in a Monte-Carlo simulation of such a system, where, at each step, one must find the time instant of the next event. The latter is determined by an integral equation and usually is rather slow in numerical implementation.
