Our current study demonstrated that the marine peroxy sesquiterpenoids isolated from the Okinawan soft coral sp. have an antitumor activity in human colon cancer cell (HCT) 116 colon cancer cells with their induction of apoptosis due to H₂O₂ production derived from the compounds. This study clarified that peroxy sesquiterpenoids ( and ) inhibited anti-apoptosis proteins, such as B-cell lymphoma-extra large (Bcl-xL) and phosphoAkt (pAkt). In addition, the heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), nuclear factor-erythroid-2-related factor (Nrf2), and phosphoNrf2 (pNrf2) proteins related to the cell survival regulation signal of Nrf2-ARE (antioxidant response element) were also suppressed in the presence of these compounds. While the cells treated with the compounds and trolox as an antioxidant expressed the inhibited proteins, such as HO-1, Nrf2, and Bcl-xL, it was suggested that the H₂O₂ involving free radical reactions derived from the molecule would be a trigger of apoptosis with the modulation of Nrf2-ARE signaling in the cells.

Nardosinone, a predominant bioactive product from DC, is well-known for its promising therapeutic applications, such as being used as a drug on anti-inflammatory, antidepressant, cardioprotective, anti-neuroinflammatory, anti-arrhythmic, anti-periodontitis, etc. However, its stability under varying environmental conditions and its degradation products remain unclear. In this study, four main degradation products, including two previously undescribed compounds [2-deoxokanshone M (64.

Microbial transformation is an efficient enzymatic approach for the structural modification of exogenous compounds to obtain derivatives. Compared with traditional chemical synthesis, the microbial transformation has in fact the undoubtable advantages of strong region-and stereo-selectivity, and a low environmental and economic impact on the production process, which can achieve the reactions challenging to chemical synthesis. Because microbes are equipped with a broad-spectrum of enzymes and therefore can metabolize various substrates, they are not only a significant route for obtaining novel active derivatives, but also an effective tool for mimicking mammal metabolism in vitro.

Abscisic acid (ABA) drives stomatal closure to minimize water loss due to transpiration in response to drought. We examined the subcellular location of ABA-increased accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in guard cells, which drive stomatal closure, in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). ABA-dependent increases in fluorescence of the generic ROS sensor, dichlorofluorescein (DCF), were observed in mitochondria, chloroplasts, cytosol, and nuclei.
