BackgroundHepatitis B virus (HBV) disproportionately affects people at risk of HIV. Encounters for HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) create opportunities for HBV screening and prevention. We quantified HBV prevalence, susceptibility, and active/passive immunization use among patients seeking HIV PEP.

Objective: We assessed the association between early HIV medical care interruption (MCI) and the development of AIDS-defining events (ADEs), serious non-AIDS events (SNAEs), and death among people with HIV (PWH) from the CoRIS cohort.
Design: We included antiretroviral-naive individuals aged at least 18 years at enrollment, recruited between 1 January 2004 and 30 May 2021, and followed-up until 30 November 2023.
Methods: Early MCI was defined as a time interval over 15 months between two consecutive visits, where the first of these visits occurred within the first 15 months of enrollment.

Introduction: The purpose of this article is to describe the global burden and temporal trends of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias from 1990 to 2021 and explore cross-country inequality associated with sociodemographic development-related factors.
Methods: The disability-adjusted life years of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias and sociodemographic index were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease 2021 study, and other sociodemographic development-related factors, including government expenditure on education (% of GDP), net national income per capita, health expenditure per capita, and fertility rate, were sourced from World Bank Data. Disability-adjusted life years of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias across 204 countries/territories and global age-sex distribution in 2021 were illustrated.

Decentralized molecular detection of pathogens remains an important goal for public health. Although polymerase chain reaction (PCR) remains the gold-standard molecular detection method, thermocycling using Peltier heaters presents challenges in decentralized settings. Recent work has demonstrated plasmonic PCR, where nanomaterials on a surface or nanoparticles in solution heat upon stimulation by light, as a promising method for rapid thermocycling.

Protothecosis is a rare and unusual disease that affects both humans and animals, including dogs. The causative agents are unicellular, achlorophyllous, "yeast-like" microalgae of the genus Prototheca (Trebouxiophyceae, Chlorophyta). Although usually saprophytic, Prototheca may, under conditions of immunologic compromise, become pathogenic and even lethal to the host.
