Molecularly imprinted polymers are synthetic receptors for a targeted molecule. As such, they are analogues of the natural antibody-antigen systems. In this review, after a recounting of the early history of the general field, we specifically focus on the application of these polymers as sensors. In these applications, the polymers are paired with a reporting system, which may be electrical, electrochemical, optical, or gravimetric. The presence of the targeted molecule effects a change in the reporting agent, and a calibrated quantity of the target is recorded. In this review, we describe the imprinted polymer production processes, the techniques used for reporting, and the applications of the reported sensors. A brief survey of recent applications to gas-phase sensing is included, but the focus is primarily on the development of sensors for targets in solution. Included among the applications are those designed to detect toxic chemicals, toxins in foods, drugs, explosives, and pathogens. The application of computational chemistry to the development of new imprinted polymers is included as is a brief assessment of future developments.

Fluoropolymer alone, as an alternative to lead-based piezoelectric materials, has shown multiple challenges to develop useful sensors for solving real-world problems such as photoacoustic, ultrasound pulse echo, and other non-destructive testing. This work demonstrates the fabrication of high frequency and wide bandwidth transducers with fluoropolymer and highly polarizing cubic single crystal Barium titanate (BaTiO) ceramic composite for high resolution in-vivo photo-acoustic and ultrasound imaging. For transducer fabrication, a customized bio-compatible nanocomposite sensor film of PVDF-TrFE (Polyvinylidene fluoride trifluoroethylene)/BaTiO (BTO) is synthesized by drop and dry in heating-cum-electro-poling system for advancing polarization, crystallinity, and higher charge generation.

Tetramethylpyrazine (TMP) is a compound known for its natural health benefits, but current detection methods for TMP are overly expensive and time-consuming. In this study, we developed functional materials with TMP molecular recognition properties using molecularly imprinted technology. As TMP does not produce electrochemical signals in the detection potential range, hexacyanoferrate was selected as a redox probe, combined with the highly conductive polymer PEDOT:PSS to enhance electrode conductivity.

The valid method was developed for analyzing empagliflozin in serum/plasma/urine using a molecularly imprinted ghost polymer-solid-phase extraction approach (MISPE) with liquid chromatographic methodology. Methacrylic acid (MAA) was used as the monomer, 2,2 azobis isobutyronitrile as the initiator and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the cross-linker in the free radical polymerization procedure. Empagliflozin was loaded onto the polymer and eluted with 1 mL of a 9:1 MeOH:acetic acid solution.

A novel electrochemical microsensor was constructed on a traditional acupuncture needle (AN) and used to monitor a biomarker of the SARS-CoV-2-N protein. The reversible interaction of the borate bond between the -diol in this glycoprotein and the phenylboronic acid in 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid (4-MPBA) was accomplished. This interaction was applied to anchor the SARS-CoV-2-N protein onto 4-MPBA, which was covalently self-assemblied onto electrodeposited AuNPs by the S-Au bond.

5-Hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), a vital metabolite of serotonin (5-HT), is crucial for understanding metabolic pathways and is implicated in various mental disorders. In situ monitoring of 5-HIAA is challenging due to the lack of affinity ligands and issues with electrochemical fouling. We present an advanced sensing approach that integrates customizable molecular imprinting polymer (MIP) with self-driven galvanic redox potentiometry (GRP) for precise, real-time in vivo monitoring of 5-HIAA.
