The impact of chlorhexidine gluconate bathing on skin bacterial burden of neonates admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. | LitMetric

AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

Objective: To assess the impact of chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) bathing on skin bacterial burden in neonates.

Study Design: In this prospective observational study, arm and groin skin bacterial growth was measured in 40 CHG-exposed and nonexposed neonates admitted to the NICU. Exposed neonates received 2% CHG baths per protocol for central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) prevention or Staphylococcus aureus decolonization.

Results: Forty neonates were enrolled, 18 of whom were CHG-exposed. Mean baseline Gram-positive (GP) bacterial burden was 2.19 log CFU/ml on the arm and 1.81 log CFU/ml on the groin. Bacterial burden decreased after the first bath, but returned to baseline by 72 h. Residual skin CHG concentration declined over time, with a corresponding increase in GP bacterial burden.

Conclusions: CHG bathing reduces skin bacterial burden, but burden returns to baseline after 72 h. Twice weekly CHG bathing may be inadequate to suppress skin bacterial growth in hospitalized neonates.

Antibiotic resistance by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is an urgent threat to human health. The biofilm and persister cells formation ability of MRSA and Staphylococcus epidermidis often companied with extremely high antimicrobial resistance. Pinaverium bromide (PVB) is an antispasmodic compound mainly used for irritable bowel syndrome.

Because of the urgent need for new antibiotics to treat drug-resistant bacterial pathogens, we employed an assay that rapidly screens large quantities of compounds for their ability to interfere with bacterial protein synthesis, in particular, the delivery of amino acids to the ribosome via tRNA and elongation factor Tu (EF-Tu). We have identified a drug lead, named MGC-10, which kills Gram-positive bacteria, including methicillin-resistant (MRSA), with a MIC of 6 µM, while being harmless to mammalian cells in that concentration range. The antibacterial activity of MGC-10 was broad against over 50 strains of antibiotic-resistant samples obtained from hospital infections, where MGC-10 inhibited all tested strains of MRSA.

Hydration conditions as a critical factor in antibiotic-mediated bacterial competition outcomes.

Appl Environ Microbiol

Institute of Environmental Sciences, Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology, Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food, and Environment, Hebrew University, Rehovot, Israel.

Antibiotic secretion plays a pivotal role in bacterial interference competition; yet, the impact of environmental hydration conditions on such competition is not well understood. Here, we investigate how hydration conditions affect interference competition among bacteria, studying the interactions between the antibiotic-producing FZB42 and two bacterial strains susceptible to its antibiotics: 85-10 and DC3000. Our results show that wet-dry cycles significantly modify the response of the susceptible bacteria to both the supernatant and cells of the antibiotic-producing bacteria, compared to constantly wet conditions.

Background: Surgical site infections (SSI) following clean abdominal surgery in cattle pose significant economic and welfare concerns. Preoperative skin asepsis aims to minimize microbial load over the surgical field before and throughout surgery to minimize its risk. While chlorhexidine (CHX) and povidone-iodine (PVI) are commonly used antiseptics for this purpose, our study introduces the so far unexplored use of octenidine (OCT) in veterinary surgery.
