An implantable system for opioid safety.

Device

October 2024

Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Cambridge, MA 02139, USA.

Naloxone can effectively rescue victims from opioid overdose, but less than 5% survive due to delayed or absent first responder intervention. Current overdose reversal systems face key limitations, including low user adherence, false positive detection, and slow antidote delivery. Here, we describe a subcutaneously implanted robotic first responder to overcome these challenges.

Background: Spontaneous acute intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is associated with greater stroke-related disability and mortality. Hematoma expansion (HME), an important treatment target in acute ICH, is time-dependent, with a greater probability of hematoma growth occurring <3 hours from ICH onset.

Summary: Promising treatment options to reduce HME include early intensive blood pressure (BP) reduction and the administration of hemostatic or anticoagulant reversal agents, yet large phase III clinical trials have so far failed to show overwhelming benefit for these interventions in acute ICH.

Inhibitory effects of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) and α-adrenergic receptor antagonist ifenprodil on human Kv1.5 channel.

Naunyn Schmiedebergs Arch Pharmacol

November 2023

Department of Physiology, Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology, BK21 plus Graduate Program, Kangwon National University College of Medicine, Hyoja-Dong, Chuncheon, 200-701, Korea.

Ifenprodil has been known to reduce cardiac contractility and cerebral vasodilation by antagonizing α-adrenergic and N-methyl D-aspartate receptor-mediated intracellular signals. This study aimed to investigate the direct effect of ifenprodil on the human voltage-gated Kv1.5 channel (hKv1.

Vitrification of bovine oocytes can impair subsequent embryo development mostly due to elevated oxidative stress. This study was aimed at examining whether glutathione, a known antioxidant, can improve further embryo development when added to devitrified oocytes for a short recovery period. Bovine in vitro matured oocytes were vitrified using an ultra-rapid cooling technique on electron microscopy grids.

The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is paramount in nucleic acid amplification testing, and for many assays, the use of PCR or qPCR is considered the 'gold standard'. While instrumentation for executing PCR has advanced over the last two decades, a growing interest in point-of-need testing has highlighted the deficit that exists for 'rapid PCR' systems. Here, we describe a field-forward prototype instrument capable of ultra-fast thermal cycling for real-time PCR amplification of DNA and RNA.
