The determination of cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12) and biotin has always been challenging because of the lack of a chromophore for biotin and trace level input for vitamin B12 in supplements. Microbiological assay methods are currently used for quantitation. However, these methods are time consuming, may lack specificity, and have high imprecision. Our laboratory developed and validated an LC method for the simultaneous quantitation of vitamin B12 and biotin. This LC method uses a single quadruple mass analyzer to detect biotin and vitamin B12 at 245.10 and 678.29, respectively. The mass analyzer allows for low limits of quantitation (biotin: 1 ng/mL; vitamin B12: 4 ng/mL). Precision results showed that injections are repeatable without the use of an internal standard (RSD < 5%). Single analyst ( = 5: RSD < 3%), within lab ( = 10: RSD < 8%), and multilab ( = 20: RSD < 13%) precision results were also much better than those reported by microbiological assay methods. Linearity was evaluated between 92.00 ng/mL and 9200 ng/mL (² 09916) for biotin and between 4.846 ng/mL and 484.6 ng/mL (² 0.9999) for vitamin B12. The method is accurate between 20 ng/mL and 60 ng/mL for vitamin B12 and between 400 ng/mL and 1200 ng/mL for biotin. The results show a simple, accurate, and precise method for the quantitation of vitamin B12 and biotin. This work demonstrates that single quadrupole mass analyzers can be successfully used to quantify trace level analytes in quality control laboratories.

Background: Cognitive impairment (CI) encompasses a wide range of symptoms and signs associated with a progressive decline in cognitive functions, which adversely affect the quality of life and autonomy of patients. Indigenous communities have been found to have a higher prevalence of CI and dementia. However, there is limited knowledge regarding the prevalence of CI in ethnically diverse populations, such as the Wayuu indigenous community.

Background: Confabulation, the fabrication of details with short lucid intervals, hinders the diagnosis of Alzheimer's and other dementias. This case report explores the complexities of diagnosing and managing Alzheimer's dementia in a culturally diverse patient exhibiting fluctuating memory and confabulation, emphasizing challenges heightened by cultural and linguistic factors.

Case: An 84-year-old African descent man resided with his family in the United States, independent in his basic daily activities but struggling with instrumental tasks due to memory impairment.

Background: Surveys based on capillary blood show that anaemia is rampant in India, but capillary blood haemoglobin (Hb) may not accurately reflect venous blood Hb concentrations. Further, iron deficiency (ID) is thought to be the main cause of anaemia, there are no venous blood-based surveys to confirm this.

Methods: A community-based (urban, slum and rural) cross-sectional, venous blood survey was conducted in eight Indian states to estimate anaemia and ID prevalences from Hb and inflammation-corrected plasma ferritin concentrations in adolescents, adults, and elderly.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to describe signalment, clinicopathological findings, management practices and the occurrence of comorbidities in feline diabetes mellitus (DM) in Germany.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional study using questionnaires and laboratory submissions to a commercial laboratory, Antech Lab Germany, between May 2021 and July 2022. Inclusion criteria were diagnosis of DM by the attending veterinarian and submission of a completed questionnaire besides blood samples.

Background: Since the gut microbiota is important for athlete health and performance, its optimization is increasingly gaining attention in sports nutrition, for example, with whole fermented foods. Sauerkraut is a traditional fermented food rich in pro-, pre-, and postbiotics, which has not yet been investigated in the field of sports nutrition.

Methods: To determine whether sauerkraut could be used for gut microbiota optimization in sports nutrition, a proof-of-concept study was conducted.
