Biodegradable polymers open the way to treatment of heart disease using transient implants (bioresorbable vascular scaffolds, BVSs) that overcome the most serious complication associated with permanent metal stents-late stent thrombosis. Here, we address the long-standing paradox that the clinically approved BVS maintains its radial strength even after 9 mo of hydrolysis, which induces a ∼40% decrease in the poly l-lactide molecular weight (). X-ray microdiffraction evidence of nonuniform hydrolysis in the scaffold reveals that regions subjected to tensile stress during crimping develop a microstructure that provides strength and resists hydrolysis. These beneficial morphological changes occur where they are needed most-where stress is localized when a radial load is placed on the scaffold. We hypothesize that the observed decrease in reflects the majority of the material, which is undeformed during crimping. Thus, the global measures of degradation may be decoupled from the localized, degradation-resistant regions that confer the ability to support the artery for the first several months after implantation.

Biomaterial-assisted therapeutic strategies enable precise modulation to direct endogenous cellular responses and harness regenerative capabilities for nerve repair. However, achieving effective cellular engagement during nerve remodeling remains challenging. Herein, a novel composite nerve guidance conduit (NGC), the GelMA/PLys@PDA-Fe@PLCL conduit is developed by combining aligned poly(l-lactide-co-caprolactone) (PLCL) nanofibers modified with polydopamine (PDA), ferrous iron (Fe⁺), and polylysine (PLys) with aligned methacrylate-anhydride gelatin (GelMA) hydrogel nanofibers.

The infestation of tissue after implantation is a major problem as a bacterial biofilm can form on the surface of the implants, leading to implant-associated infections (IAIs). One approach to prevent such IAI is to apply antibacterial coatings consisting of polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEM) and bacteriophages (PHAGs). PEM were constructed by alternately adsorbing oppositely charged polyelectrolytes on a substrate according to the layer-by-layer concept.

The most common surgical procedure to manage the malunion of the bones is corrective osteotomy. The current gold standard for securing the bone segments after osteotomy is the use of titanium plates and allografts which have disadvantages such as possible allergic reaction, additional operations such as extraction of the graft from other sites and removal operation. The utilization of resorbable materials presents an opportunity to mitigate these drawbacks but has not yet been thoroughly researched in the literature.

Polyethylene glycol (PEG)-coated microsized artificial oxygen carriers (AOCs) with a perfluorooctyl bromide (PFOB) core and poly(lactide--caprolactone) (PLC) shell were successfully fabricated using Shirasu porous glass (SPG) membrane emulsification. The PEG coating was achieved by adding the polylactide--polyethylene glycol--polylactide (PLA-PEG-PLA) block copolymer to the disperse phase during the SPG membrane emulsification process. During the DCM evaporation process, the three-layer structure of the PEG layer, PLC shell, and PFOB core of the AOCs spontaneously formed by phase separation.

Avoiding epidural adhesion following spinal surgery can reduce clinical discomfort and complications. As the severity of epidural adhesion is positively correlated with the inflammatory response, implanting a fibrous membrane after spinal surgery, which can act as a physical barrier to prevent adhesion formation while simultaneously modulates postoperative inflammation, is a promising approach to meet clinical needs. Toward this end, we fabricated an electrospun core-shell fibrous membrane (CSFM) based on polylactic acid (PLA) and infused the fiber core region with the potent natural anti-inflammatory compound docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
