Buxtonella species are large cyst-forming ciliates that infect ruminants and monkeys, and are morphologically similar to Balantidium coli ciliates that infect pigs, humans, monkeys, and other animals. In this study, we isolated spherical cysts of ciliates that were similar to those of Balantidium and Buxtonella species within collared mangabeys (Cercocebus torquatus) from the Wangcheng Zoo of Luoyang in the Henan Province of central China. The cysts were further identified and designated as belonging to the Buxtonella monkey genotype based on molecular analyses of 18S rRNA, 5.8S rRNA, and ITS1-5.8S rRNA-ITS2 genetic markers. To our knowledge, this is the first report of Buxtonella monkey genotype within monkeys in China. These results will help clarify the classification of species of cyst-forming ciliate infections in monkeys.

Several non-human primate species engage in vocal exchanges of contact calls, throughout the day in peaceful contexts. These vocal exchanges have been compared to human conversations because vocalizations are uttered in turn-taking: a temporal pattern where interlocutors minimize silences and avoid overlaps. But observing such a pattern in the spontaneous production of a species, as is the case with red-capped mangabeys (Cercocebus torquatus), is not enough to make it a rule.

Unlabelled: Sooty mangabeys (SMs) are natural hosts of simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) and do not progress to AIDS despite high viral replication. The main factors involved in the benign nature of this infection are (i) low level of immune activation, (ii) relative preservation of specific CD4+ T-cell subsets from direct virus infection, and (iii) absence of microbial translocation from the gut to the systemic circulation. To determine the impact of SIV infection on underlying cause of death, we retrospectively analyzed data from 307 SMs (219 SIV infected and 88 uninfected) housed at the Emory Primate Center that have died between 1986 and 2022.

The social complexity hypothesis for the evolution of communication posits that complex social environments require greater communication complexity for individuals to effectively manage their relationships. We examined how different socially uncertain contexts, reflecting an increased level of social complexity, relate to variation in signalling within and between two species, which display varying levels of fission-fusion dynamics (sympatric-living chimpanzees and sooty mangabeys, Taï National Park, Ivory Coast). Combined signalling may improve message efficacy, notably when involving different perception channels, thus may increase in moments of high social uncertainty.

Simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), which originated in African monkeys, crossed the species barrier into humans and ultimately gave rise to HIV and the global HIV/AIDS epidemic. While SIV infects over 40 primate species in sub-Saharan Africa, testing for RNA viruses in wild primate populations can be challenging. Optimizing field-friendly methods for assessing viral presence/abundance in non-invasively collected biological samples facilitates the study of viruses, including potentially zoonotic viruses, in wild primate populations.
