A patient with permanent atrial fibrillation, triple mechanical prosthetic valve replacements, and nonischemic cardiomyopathy presented with symptomatic high-grade atrioventricular block. A transvenous implantable cardioverter-defibrillator system was achieved with the defibrillator lead and bipolar pace-sense lead in separate anterolateral branches of the coronary sinus with successful defibrillation testing.

Targeting nuclear mechanics is emerging as a promising therapeutic strategy for sensitizing cancer cells to immunotherapy. Inhibition of the mechano-sensory kinase ATR leads to mechanical vulnerability of cancer cells, causing nuclear envelope softness and collapse and activation of the cGAS-STING-mediated innate immune response. Finding novel compounds that interfere with the non-canonical role of ATR in controlling nuclear mechanics presents an intriguing therapeutic opportunity.

The Effect of Cellulose Nanocrystals on the Molecular Organization, Thermomechanical, and Shape Memory Properties of Gelatin-Matrix Composite Films.

Gels

November 2024

Biopolymer Research & Engineering Laboratory (BIOPREL), Escuela de Nutrición y Dietética, Facultad de Medicina, Universidad de Los Andes, Santiago 7550000, Chile.

Gelatin is a natural hydrocolloid with excellent film-forming properties, high processability, and tremendous potential in the field of edible coatings and food packaging. However, its reinforcing by materials such as cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) is often necessary to improve its mechanical behavior, including shape memory properties. Since the interaction between these polymers is complex and its mechanism still remains unclear, this work aimed to study the effect of low concentrations of CNC (2, 6, and 10 weight%) on the molecular organization, thermomechanical, and shape memory properties in mammalian gelatin-based composite films at low moisture content (~10 weight% dry base).

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate pulp regeneration by comparing the application of native chitosan-based scaffolds with enzymatically modified chitosan-based scaffolds in mature teeth with apical lesions, using clinical and radiographic assessments.

Methods: The eligibility criteria for this study were participants aged between 15-45 years, free from systemic diseases and with necrotic mature single-rooted teeth with periapical lesions. The teeth were equally and randomly allocated into three groups (1: 1: 1 allocation): Group A received treatment with a Blood Clot (BC) scaffold; Group B with a combination of Native Chitosan and Blood Clot (NCS+BC) scaffold; and Group C with Enzymatically-Modified Chitosan and Blood Clot (EMCS+BC) scaffold.

Self-healing PVA/Chitosan/MXene triple network hydrogel for strain and temperature sensors.

Int J Biol Macromol

December 2024

College of Textile and Clothing Engineering, Soochow University, 199 Ren-ai Road, Suzhou 215123, China. Electronic address:

Conductive hydrogels have attracted intensive attention for their promising applications in flexible electronics, sensors, and electronic skins. However, extremely poor adaptability under cold or dry environmental conditions along with inferior repairability seriously hinders the development of hydrogels in wearable electronics. Here, a triple network conductive hydrogel (PBCP-MXene) was prepared by proportionally mixing polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), borax, chitosan (CS), phytic acid (PA), and MXene.

Diffusion model assisted designing self-assembling collagen mimetic peptides as biocompatible materials.

Brief Bioinform

November 2024

Engineering Research Center of Ministry of Education on Food Synthetic Biotechnology and School of Biotechnology, Jiangnan University, 1800 Lihu Road, Wuxi, Jiangsu 214222, China.

Collagen self-assembly supports its mechanical function, but controlling collagen mimetic peptides (CMPs) to self-assemble into higher-order oligomers with numerous functions remains challenging due to the vast potential amino acid sequence space. Herein, we developed a diffusion model to learn features from different types of human collagens and generate CMPs; obtaining 66% of synthetic CMPs could self-assemble into triple helices. Triple-helical and untwisting states were probed by melting temperature (Tm); hence, we developed a model to predict collagen Tm, achieving a state-of-art Pearson's correlation (PC) of 0.
