Article Abstract

[Purpose] The initial cardiopulmonary response to exercise is hypothesized to be a useful predictor of aerobic threshold in patients with heart failure. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between aerobic threshold and cardiopulmonary responses to exercise onset by comparing patients with heart failure using preserved (≥50%) and reduced (<50%) left ventricular ejection fractions. [Participants and Methods] Twenty-eight males (age, 36-82 years; 12 with preserved and 16 with reduced left ventricular ejection fractions) underwent a progressive submaximal cardiopulmonary exercise test using a cycle ergometer. The aerobic threshold, time constant, and area under the oxygen uptake curve for the first 4 min (V̇OAUC) were determined. [Results] A significant association was observed between aerobic threshold and V̇OAUC in the reduced group but not in the preserved group. No significant correlations were found between time constant and V̇OAUC or between aerobic threshold and time constant in either group. [Conclusion] The results suggest that V̇OAUC measured from exercise onset to an initial 4-min period could provide an easily and safely obtained predictor to assess aerobic capacity in people with reduced left ventricular ejection fractions.

Both resistance training (RT) and long-duration, high-intensity stretching induce muscular adaptations; however, it is unknown whether the modalities are complementary or redundant, particularly in well-trained individuals. A case-study was conducted on a competitive bodybuilder implementing long-duration, high-intensity stretching of the plantar flexors (60 min 6x/week for 12 weeks) in conjunction with their habitual RT. Ultrasound muscle architecture (muscle thickness [MT], fascicle length [FL], and pennation angle [PA]) measurements were collected at multiple sites at four weekly baseline sessions, six (mid) and 12 (post1) weeks following the commencement of the intervention, and a week after the intervention (post2) while isometric strength and range of motion (RoM) were obtained once at baseline, mid, post1, and post2.

Changes in DNA methylation and subsequent alterations in gene expression have opened a new direction in research related to the pathogenesis of peripheral neuropathic pain (PNP). This study aimed to reveal epigenetic perturbations underlying DNA methylation in the dorsal root ganglion (DRG) of rats with peripheral nerve injury in response to prior exercise and identify potential target genes involved. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into three groups, namely, chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the sciatic nerve, CCI with prior 6-week swimming training (CCI_Ex), and sham operated (Sham).

Questionnaires exploring tourists' perceptions of ideal climatic conditions are argued to be a more suitable data source for the development of tourism climate indices than the utilization and integration of expert opinion and pre-established thresholds. This assumes that those tourist respondents can accurately quantify meteorological conditions at a given point in time, and effectively discriminate between meteorological thresholds of suitable and unsuitable conditions. For variables such as rainfall and sunshine hours, this assumption is fairly reasonable.
