New agendas for conservation are regularly proposed based on the ground that existing strategies are overly pessimistic, restricted to biodiversity hotspots, and inappropriate to halt biodiversity loss. However, little empirical evidence supports such claims. Here we review the 12971 papers published in the leading conservation journals during the last 15 years to assess what conservation actually does. Although conservation research is affected by specific bias, conservation is playing a major role in providing empirical evidence of human impacts on biodiversity. Encouraging biodiversity comebacks are also published and a wide range of conservation tools, beyond the development of protected areas in wilderness areas, are promoted. We argue that finding new routes to conservation is neither necessary nor sufficient to halt biodiversity loss.

Autologous platelet concentrates as adjuncts to non-surgical periodontal therapy: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Clin Oral Investig

January 2025

Periodontology Unit, Centre for Host Microbiome Interactions, Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences, King's College London, London, UK.

Objective: To evaluate the possible additional clinical benefit from autologous platelet concentrate (APC) treatment adjunct to non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT).

Methods: Electronic (MEDLINE/Embase/Cochrane/MedNar/CORE) and hand searches were conducted. Following studies selection, evidence tables were formed, and meta-analyses were performed for the following outcomes: probing pocket depth (PPD) reduction, clinical attachment level (CAL) gain, and bleeding on probing (BoP) reduction.

Typing Arctic and Africa-2 clades of rabies virus using clade-defining single nucleotide polymorphisms.

January 2025

Department of Biochemistry, Division of Biological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India.

Rabies is a deadly neurotropic, zoonotic disease with a mortality rate of 100% after symptoms appear. Rabies virus (RABV) is the primary cause of rabies disease in humans, and it mainly spreads via dog bites in developing countries. Over the course of RABV evolution, multiple RABV variants, called clades, have emerged.

Objectives: This study aimed to assess the vertical misfit at the implant-abutment interface in external and internal connections across various implant brands, comparing original milled titanium abutments with laser-sintered cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) abutments.

Materials And Methods: A total of 160 implants from four different brands were utilized, with 80 featuring external connections (EC) and 80 internal connections (IC). Original milled titanium abutments (n = 160) and Co-Cr laser-sintered abutments (n = 160) were randomly attached to each connection type, following the manufacturer's recommended torque.

Advances in fungal sugar transporters: unlocking the potential of second-generation bioethanol production.

Appl Microbiol Biotechnol

January 2025

Department of Biochemistry and Immunology, Ribeirão Preto Medical School, University of São Paulo, Ribeirão Preto, SP, 14049-900, Brazil.

Second-generation (2G) bioethanol production, derived from lignocellulosic biomass, has emerged as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels by addressing growing energy demands and environmental concerns. Fungal sugar transporters (STs) play a critical role in this process, enabling the uptake of monosaccharides such as glucose and xylose, which are released during the enzymatic hydrolysis of biomass. This mini-review explores recent advances in the structural and functional characterization of STs in filamentous fungi and yeasts, highlighting their roles in processes such as cellulase induction, carbon catabolite repression, and sugar signaling pathways.

De novo proliferative glomerulonephritis with monoclonal IgG deposits in an adolescent kidney transplant recipient.

January 2025

Department of Pediatrics, University of California, San Diego, 3020 Children's Way MC 5173, San Diego, CA, 92123, USA.

Proliferative Glomerulonephritis with Monoclonal IgG Deposits (PGNMID) is a glomerular disease characterized by membranoproliferative and mesangioproliferative lesions, with granular capillary wall monoclonal IgG positivity and immunoglobulin light chain restriction. Most commonly a disease of older adults, we present the case of an 18-year-old patient who developed de novo PGNMID in a kidney allograft three years after kidney transplantation. There was minimal proteinuria and no serum paraproteinemia was detected, so the patient was managed conservatively.
