During a systematic screening of Algerian thalassemics by determining the DNA polymorphism haplotypes in the beta globin gene cluster, a novel haplotype was identified. The DNA of a homozygous individual was cloned and sequenced. The mutation, a G----A change, at position 5 of the small intervening sequence, probably interferes with normal splicing events, and, moreover, creates a new Eco RV restriction site that provides a useful diagnostic tool for detecting this condition.

Klaus Tschira Institute for Integrative Computational Cardiology, University Hospital Heidelberg, Im Neuenheimer Feld 669, 69120 Heidelberg, Germany.

Aims: Data availability remains a critical challenge in modern, data-driven medical research. Due to the sensitive nature of patient health records, they are rightfully subject to stringent privacy protection measures. One way to overcome these restrictions is to preserve patient privacy by using anonymization and synthetization strategies.

This article analyzes and compares three methodologies for identifying suitable regions for solar hydrogen production using photovoltaic panels: AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process), FAHP (Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process), and MC-FAHP (Monte Carlo FAHP), integrated with GIS (Geographic Information Systems). The study employs ten criteria across technical (Global Horizontal Irradiance, temperature, slope, elevation, orientation), economic (distance from transportation and electrical networks), and social (population density, proximity to residential areas) factors. Environmental and exclusion criteria define restrictive zones.

The PSO-IFAH optimization algorithm for transient electromagnetic inversion.

PLoS One

January 2025

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, The University of Tulsa, Tulsa, OK, United States of America.

As a non-contact method, the transient electromagnetic (TEM) method has the characteristics of high efficiency, small impact of device, no limitation of site range, and high resolution, and is a hot topic in current research. However, the research on the refined data processing method of TEM is lag, which seriously restricts the application in superficial engineering investigation and is a key problem that needs to be solved urgently. The particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm and firefly algorithm (FA) were successful swarm intelligence algorithms inspired by nature.

Leptomeningeal carcinomatosis is a form of advanced metastatic disease conferring poor prognosis, most commonly associated with melanoma, small cell lung cancer, and breast cancer. In rare cases it has been shown to be associated with stroke thought to be related to vasculopathy caused by tumoral infiltration of cerebral vasculature. We present a case of acute cerebellar infarction in a patient with metastatic breast cancer complicated by leptomeningeal carcinomatosis, admitted for worsening metastatic disease.
