The importance of fucoidan as a functional ingredient in food, health products, and pharmaceutics is well-recognized due to its beneficial biological effects. Fucoidan is usually extracted from brown seaweeds, including . Fucoidan exhibits beneficial bio-activity and has antioxidant, anticancer, and anticoagulant properties. This review focuses on the biological activity of -derived fucoidan and investigates its structure⁻activity or fraction⁻activity relationship. It also describes several fucoidan extracts, along with their claimed anticancer effects. It aims to provide information and thoughts for future research such as the development of fucoidan into functional foods or nutraceuticals.

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) serves as a home-based kidney replacement therapy with increasing utilization across the globe. However, long-term use of high-glucose-based PD solution incites repeated peritoneal injury and inevitable peritoneal fibrosis, thus compromising treatment efficacy and resulting in ultrafiltration failure eventually. In the present study, we utilized human mesothelial MeT-5A cells for the in vitro experiments and a PD mouse model for in vivo validation to study the pathophysiological mechanisms underneath PD-associated peritoneal fibrosis.

Cystitis glandularis (CG), known as a pre-gradual lesion in the bladder, is the pathological changes in the vesical mucosa characterized by inflammatory invasion and chronic obstruction. Clinically, effective treatment against CG is prescribed only when using drug therapy. Fucoidan, the naturally extractive polysaccharide, is well-reported bioactive compound with anti-inflammatory and immunoregulatory properties.

This study aimed to investigate the biological activity of crude and purified laminarin and fucoidan samples extracted from Irish brown macroalgae species and . The antioxidant capacity of the samples was evaluated using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and ferric-reducing antioxidant power assays. The anti-inflammatory potential of the samples was analysed using the cyclooxygenases inhibition activity, and the antidiabetic activity was evaluated using a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor screening assay.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on extracting alginate from solid phase byproducts of fucoidan extraction from brown seaweed using ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) with sodium bicarbonate.
  • The optimal extraction conditions determined included a 69% ultrasound amplitude and a 30-minute sonication time, yielding low molecular weight alginate.
  • Characterization techniques like FTIR, TGA, and DSC indicated that the alginate extracted via UAE had comparable properties to those obtained through traditional methods, indicating its effectiveness and sustainability.
