The effect of the substitution of Y by Nd on the structural and magnetic properties of neodymium-doped yttrium iron garnet, NdYFe₅O with in the range of 0⁻2.5, is presented. Oxide powders of Fe₂O₃, Nd₂O₃, and Y₂O₃ were mixed in a stoichiometric ratio and milled for 5 h using high-energy ball milling, before being uniaxially pressed at 900 MPa and annealed at 1373 K for 2 h to obtain NdYFe₅O (0 ≤ ≤ 2.5). It was found that the mechanical milling of oxides followed by annealing promotes the complete structural formation of the garnet structure. Additionally, the X-ray diffraction patterns confirm the complete introduction of Nd into the garnet structure with a neodymium doping concentration () of 0⁻2.0, which causes a consistent increment in the lattice parameters with the Nd content. When is higher than 2.0, the yttrium orthoferrite is the predominant phase. Besides, the magnetic results reveal an increase in the Curie temperature (583 K) as the amount of Nd increases, while there was enhanced saturation magnetization as well as modified remanence and coercivity with respect to non-doped YIG.

Magnetic systems, wherein competing degree of freedoms arising from spin orbit coupling and crystal electric field lead to non-trivial magnetic ground states, remains in the forefront of research in condensed matter physics. Here, we present a comprehensive investigation on three-dimensional rare-earth based spin systems NdTaO4 and NdNbO4, where the Nd ions sit on a stretched diamond lattice. No signatures of long-range ordering and spin freezing are observed down to 1.

The cadmium-rich intermetallic compounds RhCd ( = Ca, Sr, Y, La-Nd, Sm-Lu) were synthesized from the elements in sealed tantalum tubes. The elements were reacted in an induction furnace and the samples were post-annealed to increase phase purity and crystallinity. The RhCd phases crystallize with the cubic CeCrAl type structure, space group 3̄.

Effect of Hubbard U-corrections on the electronic and magnetic properties of 2D materials: a high-throughput study.

Computational Atomic-scale Materials Design (CAMD), Department of Physics, Technical University of Denmark, Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark.

We conduct a systematic investigation of the role of Hubbard U corrections in electronic structure calculations of two-dimensional (2D) materials containing 3 transition metals. Specifically, we use density functional theory (DFT) with the PBE and PBE+U approximations to calculate the crystal structure, band gaps, and magnetic parameters of 638 monolayers. Based on a comprehensive comparison to experiments we first establish that the inclusion of the U correction worsens the accuracy for the lattice constants.

In this study, a relationship between climate indices (local - air temperatures, and wide-scale - North Atlantic Oscillation) and first arrival dates (FAD) of a short-distant migratory bird, the Common Wood Pigeon (Columba palumbus) at a breeding site in SE Poland (Lublin) was investigated. Temporal patterns of FAD on a multi-year scale (20 years within 39 years between 1982 and 2020) were also studied. Additionally, correlations between mean air temperature at Lublin and sites along the spring migration route with various distances from the breeding site and various time lags were searched for.
