We developed a simple and efficient process, laser heating of nickel powder in ethanol, to produce carbon-encapsulated nickel microspheres. Long-pulse-width laser heated nickel powder suspended in pure ethanol into liquid droplets. In turn, the latter droplets became sphere-like, pyrolyzed surrounding ethanol and dissolved the produced carbon atoms. Because of their lower solubility in solid nickel, excess carbon atoms were then expelled from the metal core after solidification, thus forming graphite-like shells on the laser-modified Ni spheres. Hence, after pyrolysis the transformation of carbon was found to follow the dissolution-precipitation mechanism. The produced carbon-encapsulated nickel microspheres exhibited higher oxidation resistance compared with the initial nickel powder, while keeping their magnetic properties essentially unchanged.

Laser cladding technology is an effective method for producing wear-resistant coatings on damaged substrates, improving both wear and corrosion resistance, which extends the service life of components. However, the fabrication of hard and brittle materials is highly susceptible to the problem of cracking. Using gradient transition layers is an effective strategy to mitigate the challenge of achieving crack-free laser-melted wear-resistant coatings.

Inconel 718 (IN718) is a polycrystalline nickel-based superalloy and one of the most widely used materials in the aerospace industry owing to its excellent mechanical performances at high temperatures, including creep resistance. Interest in additively manufactured components in aerospace is greatly increasing due to their ability to reduce material consumption, to manufacture complex parts, and to produce out-of-equilibrium microstructures, which can be beneficial for mechanical behavior. IN718's properties are, however, very sensitive to microstructural features, which strongly depend on the manufacturing process and subsequent heat treatments.

This paper reviews recent advances in the synthesis of cobalt-free high-strength tungsten carbide (WC) composites as sustainable alternatives to conventional WC-Co composites. Due to the high cost of cobalt, limited supply, and environmental concerns, researchers are exploring nickel, iron, ceramic binders, and nanocomposites to obtain similar or superior mechanical properties. Various synthesis methods such as powder metallurgy, encapsulation, 3D printing, and spark plasma sintering (SPS) are discussed, with SPS standing out for its effectiveness in densifying and preventing WC grain growth.

One of the concepts behind Generation IV reactors is a molten salt coolant system, where the materials for the reactor itself and for the primary and secondary circuit components are subjected to extreme chemical and thermal stresses. Due to the unavailability of these materials, a nickel-molybdenum alloy known as MoNiCr has been developed in the Czech Republic. This paper discusses the manufacturing process for the MoNiCr alloy, covering conventional casting technology, forming, powder atomization, additive manufacturing (AM) using the directed energy deposition (DED-LB) process, and final heat treatment.
