The varicella-zoster virus (VZV) genome, comprises both unique and repeated regions. The genome also includes reiteration regions, designated R1 to R5, which are tandemly repeating sequences termed elements. These regions represent an understudied feature of the VZV genome.

The length-heterogeneity PCR is a low throughput molecular biology methods explored to monitor bacteria populations in different environments. It could be more used in food microbiology analysis, not only for fingerprinting analysis, but it has been hampered until now by a limiting factor which relates to the high percentage of secondary peaks. With the aim to overcome this problem, different experiments were performed focusing on changing PCR parameters in order to obtain more specific amplicon patterns and also to reduce the complexity of community patterns.

Ensiling of forages was recognized as a microbial-driven process as early as the late 1800s, when it was associated with the production of "sweet" or "sour" silage. Classical microbiological plating techniques defined the epiphytic microbial populations associated with fresh forage, the pivotal role of lactic acid-producing bacteria in the ensiling process, and the contribution of clostridia, bacilli, yeast, and molds to the spoilage of silage. Many of these classical studies focused on the enumeration and characterization of a limited number of microbial species that could be readily isolated on selective media.
