In order to conceal the unpleasant smell of pharmaceutical raw materials of Penicillin V potassium, we use β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) as a drug carrier. The Penicillin V potassium β-CD inclusion complex was prepared by saturated aqueous solution method; the characterization of penicillin V potassium β-CD inclusion complex is determined by scanning electron microscopy, Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD), the formation constants of the complexes were determined by UV spectrophotometry; based on the results obtained from the orthogonal experimental design, the optimum preparation process are summarized as follow: β-CD: Penicillin V potassium = 4: 1 (molar ratio), stirring temperature 50 centigrade, stirring time 12h, the encapsulation efficiency is 29.40%.

Synergistic effect of proanthocyanidins and cefquinoxime sulfate on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

Pak J Pharm Sci

January 2025

Innovation Center Laboratory for Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM), College of Veterinary Medicine, China Agricultural University, Beijing, China.

To address the severe problem of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) resistance, this study identified a single component from traditional Chinese medicine that, when used in combination with existing antibiotics, enhances the therapeutic efficacy of the antimicrobial drugs. Using the micro broth dilution method and the checkerboard dilution method, susceptibility tests were conducted on ten commonly used β-lactam antibiotics against eleven strains of MRSA. It was found that cefquinome sulfate exhibits synergistic activity with PROs.

Genetic and Genomic Approaches to the Study of Drug-Induced Liver Injury.

Liver Int

January 2025

Faculty of Medical Sciences, Translational & Clinical Research Institute, Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.

Idiosyncratic hepatotoxicity induced by prescribed drugs has been known since the early 20th century. Identifying risk factors, including genetic factors, that trigger this drug-induced liver injury (DILI) has been an important priority for many years, both to prevent drugs that cause liver injury being licensed and as a potential means of preventing at-risk patients being prescribed causative drugs. Improved methods for genomic analysis, particularly the development of genome-wide association studies, have facilitated the identification of genomic risk factors for DILI, but, to date, there are only two main examples, liver injury caused by amoxicillin-clavulanate (AC) and by flucloxacillin, where genetic risk factors causing the injury have been identified and replicated with understanding of the underlying mechanism.

Article Synopsis
  • - A study evaluated the management of primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) in pediatric participants using a multicenter, observational approach, collecting data on therapy types and their annual usage.
  • - Over 137 participants were monitored for 13 years, finding that nearly all received antibiotics, with a significant number using cephalosporins and chronic azithromycin, and older patients tended to utilize more therapies.
  • - Results indicated that therapy usage varies significantly, often correlating with age and specific types of ciliary defects, highlighting the need for more disease-specific research to better understand the effectiveness of these treatments.

Temporal control of Staphylococcus aureus intracellular pH by sodium and potassium.

FEMS Microbiol Lett

January 2024

Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO 80523, United States.

Adaptation to environmental change during both colonization and infection is essential to the pathogenesis of Staphylococcus aureus. Like other bacterial pathogens that require potassium to fulfill nutritional and chemiosmotic requirements, S. aureus has been shown to utilize potassium transport to modulate virulence gene expression, antimicrobial resistance, and osmotic tolerance.
