The article provides an overview of the literature that focuses on the main types of human adaptation to cold and mechanisms for increasing heat production. It is shown that the studies in recent years, aimed at studying the molecular mechanisms of adaptation to cold, confirmed the results of previous physiological studies have demonstrated that the major contribution to adaptive thermogenesis during cooling made by oxidative fibers in skeletal muscle (birds, marsupials, large placental and people) and brown adipose tissue (small placenta, especially rodents). The main sources of thermoregulatory heat generation are the contractile activity (thermoregulatory shivering and muscle tone), the uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation and decrease in thermodynamic efficiency of the ATP-powered pumps (ATPase), which are induced by noradrenaline and thyroid hormones and accompanied by an increase in the consumption of oxygen and energy substrates. During long-term adaptation to cold the number and activity of mitochondria increase to provide enhanced ATP consumption.

Propionate is a key intermediate in anaerobic digestion (AD) under low operational temperatures, which can destabilize the process. In this study, the supplementation of syntrophic cold-tolerant consortia and trace elements significantly improved the performance of psychrophilic (20 °C) reactor, increasing methane production to 91 % of mesophilic reactor levels and reducing propionate concentrations to less than 2 % of those in untreated psychrophilic reactors. Multi-omics analyses revealed that psychrophilic conditions downregulated the methylmalonyl-CoA and aceticlastic methanogenesis pathways.

Tropical fruit-derived Lactiplantibacillus as potential probiotic and antifungal agents against Fusarium oxysporum.

Fifty-five lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were isolated from seven selected tropical fruits, with Solanum nigrum exhibiting the highest LAB prevalence and Couroupita guianenis and Musa fruits showing the lowest counts. Two strains isolated from Ficus racemosa demonstrated significant antifungal activity against Fusarium oxysporum. 16S rDNA sequencing identified these strains as Lactiplantibacillus plantarum MYSVCF3 and Lpb.

The common cold coronaviruses are a source of ongoing morbidity and mortality particularly among elderly and immunocompromised individuals. While cross-reactive immune responses against multiple coronaviruses have been described following severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and vaccination, it remains unclear if these confer any degree of cross-protection against the common cold coronaviruses. A recombinant fowl adenovirus vaccine expressing the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein (FAdV-9-S19) was generated, and protection from SARS-CoV-2 challenge was shown in K18-hACE2 mice.
