AI Article Synopsis

  • A study explored the relationship between tumor stage, specific biomarkers (Ki-67, Bcl-2, HIF-1α, cyclin D1), and metabolic imaging metrics (MTV, TLG, SUV) in 25 laryngeal cancer patients.
  • Significant correlations were found between cyclin D1 and metrics like MTV and TLG, while Bcl-2 showed correlations with SUV and tumor stage.
  • The research emphasizes the importance of combining biomarker analysis with PET/CT imaging data for better staging and treatment strategies in laryngeal cancer.

Article Abstract

Objectives: To investigate the correlation between tumor stage, Ki-67, Bcl-2, hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), cyclin D1 and metabolic tumor volume (MTV), total lesion glycolysis (TLG), maximum standardized uptake value (SUV) measured by F fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG PET/CT) in patients diagnosed with laryngeal cancer.

Patients And Methods: In this study, included 25 consecutive laryngeal cancer patients (2 women, 23 men) diagnosed and treated in the Otorhinolaryngology Department of our tertiary care center. All cases underwent F FDG PET/CT and SUV, mean standardized uptake value, MTV, and TLG values were calculated. Tumor staging was made and immunohistochemical staining was carried out for Ki-67, Bcl-2, HIF-1α and cyclin D1.

Results: Eight (32%) patients had glottic laryngeal cancer, 6 (24%) had supraglottic laryngeal cancer and 11 (44%) had transglottic laryngeal cancer. Cyclin D1 was significantly correlated with MTV (r = 0.45, P = 0.03), TLG (r = 0.492, P = 0.01) and T-stage (r = 0.483, P = 0.02). Bcl-2 was significantly correlated with SUV (r = -0.41, P = 0.05) and tumor stage (r = -0.442, P = 0.03). MTV and TLG are significantly correlated with nodal stage (r = 0.422, P = 0.04, r = 0.419, P = 0.04), while TLG (r = 0.403, P = 0.05) and SUV (r = 0.440, P = 0.03) were correlated with tumor stage.

Conclusion: Our results indicated that biomarkers such as cyclin D1 and Bcl-2 were correlated with measures such as MTV, TLG, and SUV in F-FDG PET/CT. Integrative and combined evaluation of biomarkers and imaging data derived from F-FDG PET/CT are important for staging and appropriate management of patients with laryngeal cancer.

Purpose: Cumulative cisplatin doses of ≥ 200 mg/m improve survival in adults with head-and-neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) undergoing chemoradiation, but many older adults with HNSCC cannot receive this prognostically relevant dose due to toxicities. This study aims to develop predictive models to assess the likelihood of older adults with HNSCC receiving ≥ 200 mg/m cisplatin during chemoradiation.

Methods: 366 patients from the SENIOR database, an international cohort of adults ≥ 65 years with HNSCC, received definitive chemoradiation with single-agent cisplatin and were analyzed.

Laryngeal disease classification using voice data: Octave-band vs. mel-frequency filters.

Heliyon

December 2024

Department of Industrial and Data Engineering, Hongik University, Seoul, South Korea.

Introduction: Laryngeal cancer diagnosis relies on specialist examinations, but non-invasive methods using voice data are emerging with artificial intelligence (AI) advancements. Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) are widely used for voice analysis, but Octave Frequency Spectrum Energy (OFSE) may offer better accuracy in detecting subtle voice changes.

Problem Statement: Accurate early diagnosis of laryngeal cancer through voice data is challenging with current methods like MFCC.

Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, The Affiliated Hospital of Southwest Medical University, No.25, Taiping Street, Jiangyang District, Luzhou, 646000, China.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of pedicled supraclavicular flaps in hypopharyngectomy reconstruction, with a focus on preserving laryngeal function.

Methods: From August 2019 to June 2022, 14 patients with primary hypopharyngeal carcinoma who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria and underwent the repair of hypopharyngeal defects using pedicled supraclavicular flaps were included retrospectively. Relevant clinical evaluation indicators include patient characteristics, defect sizes, flap sizes, flap harvesting time, postoperative hospital stay, postoperative complications, recurrence, and survival outcomes.

Objective: The objective of this study is to provide a retrospective review of the 40-year experience of three oncology referral centers in the field of reconstructive laryngeal surgery.

Materials And Methods: A multi-institutional retrospective analysis included adult patients who underwent reconstructive laryngeal surgery for cT2-T4a laryngeal cancer (LC) between 1 June 1987 and 1 July 2019. Patients were stratified according to the European Laryngological Society classification for open partial horizontal laryngectomy (OPHL).
