Unlabelled: Background/ Aim: There is evidence that inhibitory effects of biguanides on oxidative phosphorylation require uptake of biguanides into the mitochondria. In this study the action of two biguanides that enter the mitochondria (buformin and phenformin) were compared with the action of two biguanides with poor uptake (phenyl biguanide and proguanil).

Materials And Methods: Effects on growth, glucose uptake and medium acidification were studied with two human colon cancer cells and seven bladder cancer cell lines.

Results: Growth inhibition was greatest with proguanil followed by phenformin, buformin and phenylbiguanide. In contrast, increased glucose uptake and acidification of the medium was observed with buformin and phenformin, with no change or less acidification of the medium with phenyl biguanide and proguanil.

Conclusion: The effect of biguanides on glucose metabolism requires mitochondrial uptake while the mechanism for growth inhibition by biguanides remains to be defined.

The objective was to study the risk factors of venous thrombosis after ankle fracture with type 2 diabetes mellitus surgery using a tourniquet and to assess the effect of ischemic preconditioning and metformin combination therapy in preventing thrombosis. One hundred eighty patients with ankle fractures combined with type 2 diabetes mellitus treated with lower extremity tourniquet surgery between January 2020 and December 2023 were analyzed. Based on postoperative color Doppler ultrasound of both lower extremities, the patients were divided into thrombus-positive and negative groups.

Within the deep lung, pulmonary surfactant coats the air-liquid interface at the surface of the alveoli. This complex mixture of amphiphilic molecules and proteins modifies the surface tension and mechanical properties of this interface to assist with breathing. In this study, we examine the effects on pulmonary surfactant function by two industrially used compounds composing surfactants and polymers.

Antiseptics have been used for infection control against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Ethanol (EtOH) was found to be effective against SARS-CoV-2, while chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) was less effective. Therefore, virucidal activity may differ between different classes of antiseptic agents.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how curcumin affects bladder cancer cells regarding growth, movement, and resistance to cisplatin (a chemotherapy drug) by targeting a specific signaling pathway (LKB1-AMPK-LC3).
  • Human bladder cancer cells (T24) and their cisplatin-resistant counterparts (T24/DDP) were treated with varying concentrations of curcumin, and various assays measured cell proliferation, migration, autophagy, and apoptosis.
  • Results showed that curcumin, especially when combined with metformin, influences these cellular functions and could reduce drug resistance, affecting the expression of proteins in the targeted signaling pathway.
