This infographic on Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron (Bt) explores the ability of this microbe to digest a broad array of complex carbohydrates, alter its surface features, and its emerging role in gastrointestinal diseases. The infographic of Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron (Bt) illustrates two key facets of its symbiotic lifestyle in the human gut: a broad ability to digest dietary fiber polysaccharides and host glycans, and a dynamic cell-surface architecture that promotes both interactions with and evasion of the host immune system. The starch-utilization system (Sus) is a cell-surface and periplasmic system involved in starch cleavage and transport. Over 80 additional Sus-like systems utilize substrates ranging from host glycans to plant cell wall pectins. Bt has evolved intricate strategies to interact with other microbes or its host, including modification of its surface. Some nutrient utilization pathways select for or directly trigger changes in capsular polysaccharide (CPS) expression. Like other fermentative members of the gut microbiome, Bt produces host absorbable short-chain and organic acids, which can all be absorbed by the host as a source of energy.

Maternal probiotic supplementation altered the microbial composition in infants' gut, yet its effect on the functional pathways of the microbiota remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the potential impact of maternal probiotic intake on the predicted functional pathways of the gut microbiome in healthy infants. A total of 24 pregnant women were randomly allocated to either the control group or the probiotic group.

Gut microbiota is associated with persistence of longer-term BNT162b2 vaccine immunogenicity.

Department of Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine, The University of Hong Kong, Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR, China.

Introduction: BNT162b2 immunogenicity wanes with time and we investigated association between gut microbiota and longer-term immunogenicity.

Methods: This cohort study prospectively recruited adult BNT162b2 two-dose recipients from three vaccination centers in Hong Kong. Blood samples were collected at baseline and day 180 after first dose, and tested for neutralizing antibodies (NAb) against receptor-binding domain (RBD) of wild type SARS-CoV-2 virus using chemiluminescence immunoassay.

Background: The responses of the infant gut microbiota to infection significantly disrupt the natural intrahost evolutionary processes of the microbiome. Here, we collected a 16-month longitudinal cohort of infant gut microbiomes affected by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Then, we developed a multicriteria approach to identify core interaction network driving community dynamics under environmental disturbances, which we termed the Conserved Variated Interaction Group (CVIgroup).

Obesity is a complex disorder influenced by various factors, including gut microbiota, which play a crucial role in metabolic regulation. This study is aimed to investigate the effects of Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron and Bacteroides fragilis, along with their derivatives-outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) and cell-free supernatant (CFS)-on the expression and secretion of satiety hormones in the murine intestinal secretin tumor cell line (STC-1). We examined the expression of peptide YY (PYY), glucagon-like peptide-1 and -2 (GLP-1 and GLP-2, encoded by the GCG gene), the enzyme prohormone convertase-1 (PC1/PCSK1 gene), and the receptors G protein-coupled receptor 119 and 120 (GPR119 and GPR120), and G-protein-coupled bile acid receptor (TGR5).
