Animal hoarding has been considered a significant problem by animal welfare and law enforcement professionals for over a century. However, it has only been recognized as an indication of a mental disorder in the last decade. I review the different forms that animal hoarding can take and the current understanding of the prevalence, demographics and possible etiology of this disorder. Conventional animal cruelty laws have often been inadequate to respond to animal hoarding cases until they reach levels that may involve serious harm to animals and people. I document how prosecution of such cases can be difficult and often does not adequately consider the mental health issues underlying the problem or the high likelihood of recidivism. Attempts to solve these problems by enacting new laws specifically addressing animal hoarding have been controversial and ineffective. I explore new approaches that coordinate a variety of community resources in response to hoarding cases that offer the best opportunity to respond to both the human and animal problems associated with animal hoarding.

Food-hoarding granivores act as both predators and dispersers of plant seeds, resulting in facultative species interactions along a mutualism-antagonism continuum. The position along this continuum is determined by the positive and negative interactions that vary with the ratio between seed availability and animal abundance, particularly for mast-seeding species with interannual variation and spatial synchrony of seed production. Empirical data on the entire fate of seeds up to germination and the influence of rodents on seed survival is rare, resulting in a lack of consensus on their position along the mutualism-antagonism continuum.

Many plants exhibit a canopy seed bank, where seeds persist within the canopy for prolonged periods, gradually descending over time and potentially influencing seed predation and animal-mediated dispersal. However, the impact of delayed seed drop on animal predation and seed dispersal remains unclear. We used Chinese Armand pine seeds to simulate delayed seed drop of the canopy seed bank by releasing 7800 pine seeds in both winter and the following summer over 2 years, tracking their fates to investigate its effect on seed predation and dispersal by rodents in a pine plantation in southwest China.
