Epoxy polymer nanocomposites filled with magnetite (FeO) clay (B), named (B-DPA-PANI@FeO) have been prepared at different filler loading (0.1, 0.5, 1, 3, 5 wt. %). The surface modification of clay by polyaniline (PANI) is achieved in the presence of 4-diphenylamine diazonium salt (DPA). The effects of the nanofiller loading on Tensile, mechanical and dielectric properties were systematically studied. Improved properties was highlighted for all reinforced samples. The addition of only 3 wt. % of the filler enhanced the tensile strength of the composites by 256%, and the glass transition temperature Tg by 37%. The dielectric spectra over a broad frequency showed a robust interface between the hybrid (B-DPA-PANI@FeO) fillers and epoxy matrix. The results showed most significant improvement in corrosion inhibition using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in 3.5 wt % NaCl, as well as a significant response in oil sensing test. High charge transfer resistance of 110 × 10 Ω.cm using 3-wt % of filler was noted compared to 0.35 × 10 Ω.cm for the pure epoxy. The results obtained herein will open new routes for the preparation of efficient anticorrosion sensor coatings.

High-Pressure Injection Injuries of the Hand: A Report of Three Cases Presenting With Acute Compartment Syndrome.

Cureus

October 2024

Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Burns Unit, Coimbra Local Health Unit, Coimbra, PRT.

Article Synopsis
  • High-pressure injection injuries in the hand often result from industrial tools like paint guns or air compressors, typically affecting laborers' non-dominant hands and causing damage that’s often underestimated despite appearing as a small puncture wound.
  • These injuries can cause severe complications such as neurovascular compromise and acute compartment syndrome due to the spread of injected materials that can be toxic and lead to further tissue damage or infections.
  • A presentation of three cases highlights urgent surgery needs for patients who experienced severe pain and swelling after different injected substances, leading to procedures for decompression, irrigation, and tissue removal to prevent serious outcomes.

It is not uncommon for metals to corrode, causing the properties of the material to be affected. Superhydrophobic materials have made effective advances in metal corrosion protection because they can effectively insulate liquids from being trapped on metal surfaces. In this study, self-assembled films were formed using octadecanethiol (ODT) modification to obtain superhydrophobic as well as superoleophilic bifunctional materials.

Oil well cement is prone to corrosion and damage in carbon dioxide (CO) acidic gas wells. In order to improve the anti-corrosion ability of oil well cement, polymer resin was used as the anti-corrosion material. The effect of polymer resin on the mechanical and corrosion properties of oil well cement was studied.

Bio-based epoxy thermoset resins have been developed from epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) cured with tannic acid (TA). These two substances of vegetable origin have been gathering attention due to their accessibility, favorable economic conditions, and convenient chemical functionalization. TA's suitable high phenolic functionalization has been used to crosslink ESO by adjusting the -OH (from TA):epoxy (from ESO) molar ratio from 0.
