Background And Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the level of mental disorders and challenging behaviour in individuals with intellectual disability (ID) supported by specialized services, but without a prior psychiatric diagnosis, and to compare the levels of different disorders depending on the severity of ID.

Methods: This is a cross-sectional study ( = 142) of population with ID. Inclusion criteria were the following: adult patients with ID and with no previous psychiatric diagnosis prior to this survey. The Wechsler Adults Intelligence Scale-II, the Psychiatric Assessment Schedule for Adults with Developmental Disability checklist and clinical interview, the Diagnostic Assessment for the Severely Handicapped scale and the Inventory for Client and Agency Planning were the assessment tools.

Results: A previously undiagnosed mental disorder was found in 29.6% of the sample. The most prevalent mental disorders were major depressive and anxiety disorders. An association between psychiatric comorbidity and challenging behaviour was found only for mild/moderate ID, especially for affective disorders.

Conclusions: The presence of a psychiatric as well as a medical comorbidity is associated with severe ID, unlike challenging behaviour. Clinical limitations of the study have been discussed.

Compression and water retention behavior of saline soil improved by MICP combined with activated carbon.

Sci Rep

December 2024

Department of Civil and Smart Construction Engineering, Shantou University, Shantou, 515063, Guangdong, China.

Saline soil is widely distributed in China and poses significant challenges to engineering construction due to its harmful effects, such as salt heaving, dissolution collapse, and frost heaving. The Microbial-Induced Calcite Precipitation (MICP) method is an emerging environmental-friendly modification that can reduce or eliminate the environmental and engineering hazards of saline soil. To verify the feasibility of the MICP method for improving the properties of saline soil, laboratory tests were conducted to study the effects of salt content, activated carbon content and freeze-thaw cycles on the compression and water retention behavior of MICP modified saline soil.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a severe neurodegenerative disease, and the most common type of dementia, with symptoms of progressive cognitive dysfunction and behavioral impairment. Studying the pathogenesis of AD and exploring new targets for the prevention and treatment of AD is a very worthwhile challenge. Accumulating evidence has highlighted the effects of fatty acid metabolism on AD.

Pan-cancer association of a mitochondrial function score with genomic alterations and clinical outcome.

Sci Rep

December 2024

Department of Laboratory Medicine, The Affiliated Hospital of Southwest Medical University, Sichuan Province Engineering Technology Research Center of Molecular Diagnosis of Clinical Diseases, Molecular Diagnosis of Clinical Diseases Key Laboratory of Luzhou, Luzhou, Sichuan, China.

Mitochondria are pivotal in cellular energy metabolism and have garnered significant attention for their roles in cancer progression and therapy resistance. Despite this, the functional diversity of mitochondria across various cancer types remains inadequately characterized. This study seeks to fill this knowledge gap by introducing and validating MitoScore-a novel metric designed to quantitatively assess mitochondrial function across a wide array of cancers.

Polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT) measures the polarization state of backscattered light from tissues and provides valuable insights into the birefringence properties of biological tissues. Contrastive unpaired translation (CUT) was used in this study to generate a synthetic PS-OCT image from a single OCT image. The challenges related to extensive data requirements relying on labeled datasets using only pixel-wise correlations that make it difficult to efficiently regenerate the periodic patterns observed in PS-OCT images were addressed.
