The efficient removal of organic contaminants from high-salinity wastewater is crucial for resource recovery and achieving zero discharge. Nanofiltration (NF) membranes are effective in separating organic compounds and monovalent salts, but they typically exhibit an excessive rejection of divalent salts. Modifying the charge characteristics of NF membranes can improve salt permeation; however, the role of charge spatial distribution in governing salt transport behavior is not fully understood.

The dynamic behavior of articular cartilage (a soft porous biological tissue) with strain-dependent nonlinear permeability under cyclic compressive loading and magnetic field is investigated computationally. The compressive force is applied on top surface of the cylindrical plug of the tissue by means of a porous filter. The study of mechanical and deformational behavior of soft porous tissues such as articular cartilage under dynamic compressive loading and magnetic field is useful in understanding the underlying mechano-biological process that may lead to the development of a treatment and recovery protocol in a diseased state.

Pickering emulsions stabilized by surfactant-modified SiO nanoparticles demonstrate good stability against droplet coalescence, showing application potential for enhanced oil recovery in high-temperature and high-salinity environments. Adjusting the adsorption ratio of surfactant on the nanoparticles significantly affects the wettability of nanoparticles and therefore regulates the microstructure and properties of Pickering emulsions. In this study, a saturated monolayer adsorption occurs at a surfactant-to-nanoparticles ratio of 0.

Background: Retinal detachment (RD) is common (23%-40%) in eyes with uveal coloboma due to early vitreous syneresis, inherent defects at the locus minoris resistentiae, and breaks in intercalary membrane (ICM).[1] Managing eyes with coloboma RD is difficult due to complexity of accessing and repairing retinal breaks. In RD surgeries, tamponade agents are used to provide surface tension across retinal breaks to prevent further fluid flow into the subretinal space until the effect of retinopexy is permanent.
