Comparison of immunological reactivity of glycoprotein antigens extracted from individual cases of mucinous and serous ovarian adenocarcinomas was performed taking into account the immunological relationship with carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), nonspecific cross-reacting antigen (NCA), alpha-1-antichymotrypsin, and alpha-1-acid glycoprotein. In all immunological tests, the specific immune sera against perchloric acid extracts of ovarian mucinous and serous cystadenocarcinomas and antisera against the reference antigens mentioned above were used. It was established that: 1) ovarian mucinous and serous adenocarcinomas are immunologically different and possess various tumor-associated antigens, 2) ovarian mucinous adenocarcinomas contain considerable amounts of CEA and NCA, whereas serous type neoplasms show negligible amounts or lack of these antigens; and 3) in both types of tumors, alpha-1-antichymotrypsin and alpha-1-acid glycoprotein activities are found. Immunological data indicate that ovarian mucinous and serous adenocarcinomas derive from separate lineages of epithelium.

Unlike high-grade serous carcinoma (HGSC), which mainly affects postmenopausal women, mucinous ovarian carcinoma (MOC) affects younger patients, with a median age at diagnosis of 53 years, and is rare among premenopausal women. After they receive anticancer treatment, these women encounter specific issues involving fertility preservation (FP) and/or pregnancy, which potentially require assisted reproductive technology (ART) as well as the prescription of hormonal contraception (HC) or hormone replacement therapy (HRT). We reviewed the available literature in PubMed/Medline concerning the risks of the development of ovarian cancer (OC), including MOC, associated with ART, HC and HRT, and literature on the impact of ovarian stimulation in the context of FP and/or ART, HC and HRT in women previously treated for OC, including MOC.

Objective: To isolate and quantify cell-free DNA, analysis for p53 mutations, and correlation with tumor burden in women with epithelial ovarian cancer compared with benign and borderline epithelial ovarian tumors.
Methods: In this case-control study, plasma samples of eligible women collected 1 hour before surgery and based on final histopathology, women with epithelial ovarian cancer recruited as cases and borderline, and benign ovarian tumors as controls. Cell-free DNA extracted from plasma serum and quantified using Nanodrop Spectrophotometer.

Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is the most lethal gynecologic malignancy which mainly consists of serous, mucinous, clear cell, and endometrioid subtypes. According to histopathology and molecular genetics, there are 5 major subtypes of ovarian carcinomas: high-grade serous (70%), endometrioid (10%), clear cell (10%), mucinous (3% to 4%), and low-grade serous (<5%) carcinomas. These tumors, which constitute over 95% of cases, represent distinct diseases with different prognoses and therapy. This review outlines contemporary advances in molecular pathology, which have expanded our knowledge of the biology of epithelial ovarian cancer and are also important to patient management.
