Objective: To investigate the relationship of the levels of serum androgens with lipid metabolism in middle-aged and elderly men in Zunyi, Guizhou.
Methods: Using the stratified cluster sampling method, we conducted a questionnaire investigation and physical examinations among 437 men in Zunyi City. We divided the subjects into a middle-aged (40-64 [53.20 ± 7.41] years, n = 269) and an elderly group (=≥65 [70.63 ± 4.66] years, n = 168) and collected fasting elbow venous blood samples from them for measuring the levels of total testosterone (TT), sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), luteinizing hormone (LH), total cholesterol (TCH), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), calculated free testosterone (cFT), free testosterone index (FTI), and testosterone secretion index (TSI).
Results: Compared with the elderly group, the middle-aged males showed significantly lower SHBG, LH, HDL and LDL, and higher cFT, FTI, TSI, TG and TCH (all P < 0.05). TT and SHBG were negatively correlated with TG, TCH, HDL and LDL, while cFT was positively correlated with TCH, and so was FTI with TG, TCH with LDL, and TSI with TCH, HDL and LDL (all P < 0.05), but LH was negatively correlated with TG, TCH and LDL (all P < 0.05). Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that TT and SHBG were negatively correlated with TG, TCH, HDL and LDL, and so was LH with TCH, HDL and LDL (all P < 0.05).
Conclusions: In the middle-aged and elderly men in Zunyi, low concentrations of TT, SHBG and LH were associated with the increased risk of high-TCH and -LDL dyslipidemia, low concentrations of TT and SHBG with that of high-TG dyslipidemia, while high concentrations of TT, SHBG and LH with that of low-HDL dyslipidemia.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the distribution patterns of PLA2G7 gene variants in Han Chinese patients with coronary heart disease (CHD), and their relationships with serum lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) levels and lipid profiles.
Methods: A total of 93 han Chinese CHD patients were recruited. Serum Lp-PLA2 levels were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), while comprehensive analysis of PLA2G7 gene polymorphisms was conducted through whole-exome sequencing.
The clinical research findings on the effects of okra consumption on blood glucose and lipids are inconsistent. In this study, we aimed to explore the impact of okra consumption on glycemic parameters and lipid profile in adults, including homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), glycosylated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), fasting blood glucose (FBG), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). To find relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs), we systemically searched EMBASE, Web of Science, PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Scopus until April 2024.

Background: Diabetes, a chronic metabolic disorder with microvascular and macrovascular complications. Metabolites of hyperglycemia mediates endothelial injury resulting in cascade of atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis sets up plaque in vessel wall and obliterates the vascular lumen which results in stroke, myocardial infarction, and peripheral vascular disease.

The aim of the current research was to investigate the association between plasma endocan levels and metabolic control parameters, as well as to evaluate its predictive value for clinical complications in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DMT2). A total of 100 DMT2 patients participated in this prospective observational study. Plasma endocan levels were significantly elevated in DMT2 patients with HbA1c > 7% (1.

The natural flavonoid quercetin, which exhibits a range of biological activities, has been implicated in liver disease resistance in recent research. study attesting to quercetin's protective effect against metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is inadequate, however. Here, our investigation explored the potential benefits of quercetin in preventing MAFLD in C57BL/6 mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD).
